You might be underestimating the numbers. Hard to know, because several countries (UK included) have criminal laws regarding citizens enlisting in foreign military forces to fight against a third country, so some people might go secretly or decide not to go. Essentially the evidence is entirely anecdotal at this point.
You are definitely underestimating the ability of military-trained personnel though. Look at the use of Private Military Contractors around the world - fairly small deployments (think company-size, less than 240 men) can achieve a lot IF they are deployed intelligently as part of a larger, coordinated all-arms effort.
All the more reason for the west to support Ukraine to remain independent and develop their own gas and oil industry.
The Iraq wars were about the west securing gas and oil supplies. So is this one.

The Tories refused to give a grant to do maintenance and repair to the UK's biggest gas storage facility in 2017 ,it was 70% of the UK gas storage capacity,
The site got shut down.
So we are now in the position of not having the storage for such a eventually.
Germany are building 2 facilities in double quick time as they didn't have storage either.

Look, we all know that there's ongoing issues in Ukraine with corruption - that's why their original application to join NATO was denied. They were told directly that they had to do more to eradicate corruption. Anyone who didn't know that a month ago probably knows it now.
Putin, as an aside, jails political opponents too. Except when he has them assassinated instead. He also routinely shuts down newspapers and TV stations. If you're happy with Ukraine being invaded and it's population killed for these reasons, you can hardly defend Putin doing the same things.

To be fair to @Kev The Rat , I am of the understanding that Zelenskyy has done something along the lines of those accusations. Apparently when UKR first asked about joining NATO, they were told quite firmly that the corruption in UKR was a barrier to membership.
