The origin of the conflict in the Donbass is very simple. Massive reserves of shale gas discovered there in 2011 / 2012, enough volume to make Ukraine something like the 15th biggest producer of gas on the planet.

Russia's two largest export markets are gas and oil and geography has, until now, made Russian gas the easiest for European countries to import.

If Ukraine was to start harvesting and exporting gas on an industrial scale it would negatively impact Russian state finances. So Russia has formented rebellion in the Donbass, making development of the gas field there impossible... And then also seized Crimea, including the territorial waters around Crimea where natural gas and oil was discovered under the sea bed in 2011 / 2012.

Follow the money. It's always about money.
Hunter Biden is shocked at this allegation.

I'm actually quite surprised that the gas is still coming.

Stop that, and it might soon make people in Europe waiver.

Most countries will now have a stock to last 6 months or so.

Cutting it off would ultimately be self defeating as it's one of the only sources of foreign currency still available to the Russian economy.

Me too. And completely agree with your second point. I'd personally be delighted to take whatever consequences that would mean for me, but there will be many who won't be in as good a spot. I hope Europe finds a way if standing firm

Cutting it off to a specific group doesn’t cut the money off though; it only cuts the money from that group.

I've seen the images of the damage being inflicted on ukrainien cities.
This wanton destruction of buildings and infrastructure just makes me angry.
I just can't see the point of it
is there any military advantage in destroying a city before occupying it.
The perceived military advantage is that intense suffering will theoretically break the will of the people to resist and pressure the defending government into surrender, to ease the suffering of the people.

The problem with that theory is that whilst it is fairly well proven in military history, the same history also suggests that after the conclusion of formal hostilities, the same infliction of great suffering tends not to be forgiven or forgotten by the population - ongoing civil disobedience and, in some cases, armed guerilla / partisan resistance will appear and endure for months or even years.

I think it's time to start coldly considering the possibility that Putin is not in Ukraine to conquer it. He may be there to make limited terriorial gains in the east, and raze its major cities otherwise.

Reports out of Kharkiv and Mariupol seem to support this. It looks like Kyiv is next.
He's there in order to take control of the recently discovered oil and gas reserves in Donbass and just offshore from Odessa and the Crimean peninsula.

The discoveries were made around 2012, and by early 2014 Russia had already started meddling in Donbass and Crimea. What an amazing and definitely unrelated coincidence.

Putin wants Ukraine as a client state with a puppet government so he can add Ukraine's natural resources to his own and prevent Europe buying gas from a free, inependent Ukraine. Because a free, independent Ukraine that sells gas and oil will be welcomed with open arms by the EU.

But, nonetheless, the confusion of one word for another is way over-played for political purposes by point-scoring clowns on the right.
I’ll still happily take the guy who briefly mixes up the word “Iranian” with “Ukrainian” over the guy who feels the need to offer an EXTENDED defense of how he does, in fact, know the difference between a person, a woman, a man, a camera, and a TV.
