I think it's time to start coldly considering the possibility that Putin is not in Ukraine to conquer it. He may be there to make limited terriorial gains in the east, and raze its major cities otherwise.

Reports out of Kharkiv and Mariupol seem to support this. It looks like Kyiv is next.

I've seen the images of the damage being inflicted on ukrainien cities.
This wanton destruction of buildings and infrastructure just makes me angry.
I just can't see the point of it
is there any military advantage in destroying a city before occupying it.

I know what you mean. Conflicts in the East have a habit of being brutal. Reminds me of the WW2 German attack on the Soviet Union, Operation Barbarossa, this was not particularly an operation to conquer but antihalation

Yup he's resorted to blowing the crap out of everything. Ukraine's cities will end up looking like Grozny. However in order to control those bombed out cities he will have to send troops in at some point and that means payback time for the Ukes.
