Always thought that we should have got Russia inside of NATO to bring them into the fold. Not to go down the rabbit hole of blaming anyone but Russia here, but hopefully this all ends soon and creating an environment were everyone can exist together peacefully has to be the long goal.

Nato prob only exists cos russia and China exist

Exactly, if Russia wanted to form a regional development fund to help increase living standards in Russia and in surrounding countries (Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia) akin to the EU, attitudes towards the Russian state might be very different. The fact is they don't. They simply don't do a great deal to increase prosperity in places like the Ukraine. Russia is a generally poor and corrupt nation without the means to do that.

Ukrainians look across borders to countries like Poland etc and see how living standards have fastly improved over the last couple of decades.

Granted, there's a few variables that also come into play (Ukraine is a very corrupt nation and the mafia have an influence on daily life). But EU membership is seen as a very real possibility and membership is proven to increase living standards in such scenarios.

Ultimately, what people want is a prosperous, safe life with good living standards. The EU offers this, Russia doesn't and never will.
Indeed. Czech GDP per capita is now certainly higher than Spain and possibly even Italy. That has come about in large part due to EU membership, and while the government over the years might have used Brussels as a convenient scapegoat, there is never really any desire to go back to the dark days under Soviet occupation.

It was created in the 40s because of the Soviet Union, yes.

But when the Soviet Union crumbled, Russia could have joined NATO and it's been reported that Putin wanted to but he didn't want to have to go through the same application process as any other country would.

OI still find this whole thing surreal and as ex forces it is really bothering me, I wish we could help militarily against this fascist dictator, never thought we'd see this again after WW2. We need to stop electing old men into power across the world, people with modern ideas need to be elected.

he wasn't that old when he was 'elected' tbh, just never left

Lavrov threatening nuclear war again:

Meanwhile an overnight opinion poll puts trust in Putin by the Russian people at 70% a 10% increase since the start of the war:

Obviously the steady stream of propaganda on Rossiya 1 is working

Always thought politicians should adhere to retirement age like the rest of the population.

This is not the time for the states to have a president who is nearing 80.

Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has posted a strongly-worded series of tweets calling for daily demonstrations across Russia and beyond.

Navalny has spent a year behind bars after surviving a poison attack that he blames on the Kremlin. Last month he went on trial on fresh charges that could see his prison time extended by more than a decade.

"We - Russia - want to be a nation of peace. Alas, few people would call us that now," he writes from the maximum-security prison east of Moscow where he is imprisoned.

But Russians should "at least not become a nation of frightened silent people" who "pretend not to notice the war".

"It's the third decade of the 21st Century, and we are watching news about people burning down in tanks and bombed houses," he says. "We are watching real threats to start a nuclear war on our TVs."

When Johnson starts locking up and poisoning political opponents, then we can start comparing the UK to Russia.

Yeah, I'm sure they all fancy joining him for a stint in the Labour Camp!
