Just looking at the estimates of total deaths in Chechnya for comparison. That’s a war that should mean less to the Russians than Ukraine.

Always thought that we should have got Russia inside of NATO to bring them into the fold. Not to go down the rabbit hole of blaming anyone but Russia here, but hopefully this all ends soon and creating an environment were everyone can exist together peacefully has to be the long goal.

This idea of Russia joining NATO while clearly impossible now would have been pretty much impossible then simply due to the size of the army and the country. Same reasons why it’ll never join the EU.

Why would it need to exist without Russia as an enemy anyway?

No one is declaring a no fly zone we went through this yesterday

The Russians know it as well and even if you could put one in place without starting a nuclear war (you can’t) they’d just change strategy on the ground you’d assume to compensate.

You seem to forget that countries wanted to join the EU and NATO. They have free determinism, which is largely what annoys Russia so much, as they only hold influence via force.

True. But reality bites both ways.

If these countries were not helped and allowed to join Nato etc, I think it's a fair assumption that Russia would try to bring them back under their influence.
