NATO doesn't make countries not be independent though? it's just a bloody alliance - one that Russia could have been part of. They aren't perfect, far from it. The West aren't. Nobody is. But we're looking at something totally different here.
No it wasn't inevitable that Russia would go to war for those reasons. The only reason is because there's a lunatic dictator in charge of that country. He's rigged elections, killed off political opponents, invaded Georgia and annexed part of Ukraine previously (long before any talk of them being in NATO). He is obsessed with the return of some form of the Soviet Union, it seems.
You know who was top of Russia's hit list for a good few years - may even still well be? The bloody doctor who was on that Icarus documentary. He is currently - and has been for some years - hiding under witness protection in the US. For a doctor who revealed a doping scandal...
