My father served in the navy and was on the HMS Duke of York when it sank the Sharnhorst, my grandfather died on a ship on the Malta run, all of my uncles served in the army during WW2. They never spoke about it really. My mate served in the Falklands and doesn’t speak of it. But for me, and I imagine millions of others there is a link to military deaths on our behalf. It’s remembrance and respect. It’s never normally interrupted and rightly so. So if it’s on Saturday I personally have no problem, if it happens on Sunday then I believe it will turn the country against them…so let’s hope it doesn’t happen…..
My old man was on the Campbeltown at St Nazaire, he saved two lives, was shot 5 times doing it, captured, escaped, shot and recaptured. He was on raids in Norway and elsewhere. My uncles were in the Merchant navy doing the Atlantic run, constantly hunted ny U Boats.
As people our age, we know from them what the sacrifice was.
I know people who served in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.
None of them spoke ever of the glory of war, that belongs to those who never sacrifice, those who use their courage for their own profit and gain.
I have been fervently anti war all my life, it's always someone else's life being sacrificed and there is ALWAYS someone who makes money out of it.
We remember the suffering of those who served, but if you want to stop more suffering then for me that is a better testament.
