At least our Government has come out of this with some dignity as regards foreign policy. Israel has a right to defend itself BUT it must be proportionate and consistent with International Law, the Geneva Convention etc

Which prompted the Israeli ambassador to Ireland to knee jerk, criticising the President for being misinformed. Coveney, a Government Minster responded:

I would be critical of many things our Government has done domestically, but I give it credit for the way it has taken a balanced approach to this dreadful slaughter.
