2025/26 David Moyes

Moyes throughout his entire managerial career has prized having autonomy over every decision of the squad , which is why during his final seasons at west ham there were stories of conflict behind the scenes because he had to work with a DOF. Also probably the reason he was willing to work with a miniscule budget for years under kenwright because despite the limited funds , kenwright didn't meddle in Moyes decision making. I would be flabbergasted if he didn't get assurances before taking the position here that he wouldn't have final say on transfers based from his established personality and also the fact he clearly states it in a presser
So if he's given the choice of two players he wouldn't automatically go for he has the choice of one of them, that sounds about right.

….it doesn’t say he has the final say, it says he’s part of the process and I suspect that’s the case. I remember Klopp saying he didn’t want Salah because he thought he was too small but he was outvoted. I think that’s more like the reality.

If anybody has a strong view/opinion that’ll obviously be considered but not necessarily the deciding factor if the others feel opposite. It’s designed for continuity regardless of manager but ultimately it’s all still down to judgement.
I think you might be getting mixed up with Mourinho saying DeBruyne was to small when he went to Hamburg and salah went to Roma.

I don't ever recall klopp questioning size

…sounds to me like Kinnear, Moyes and Cox look at the recommendations and come to agreement. I don’t think it’s as despotic as you’d like to think, obviously cost and strategy are factors and in the end they’ll reach consensus.
Eggs you really need to watch and listen to what Moyes says and the way he says it. There is no way he would be part of a club that didn't give him 100% say over signings. He won't work with a Director of Football. He thinks he's a football genius and he would never, NEVER take a player recommended by a transfer committee unless he wanted them. If they did make him take one, he'd just never play them, which is another explanation as to lack of game time for some of our signings.

No I think @Eggs is right re Saleh.

I vividly remember Klopp crediting the recruitment team with his signing. Salah was their choice not his and they had to convince him. I don't recall any comment about his size though.

There's a huge difference between a manager saying I want player A,go out and buy him for me,and a manager who is given a choice of players B and C who the scouting department bring him who are at a price that the other members of the transfer committee have approved and he says okay I'll go with B then.
Yes. Which is why I wrote this:
I hope it's smoother. That would be my priority in the rebuild.

I sensed a lot of tension between a Moyes, Kinnear and the recruitment team last summer and throughout the season.

I know Moyes has been keen to stress he has final say, but I do wonder if that's within parameters set by the club - i.e. The club give him a list of players and he chooses. Whatever it is, it needs sorting for this summer.

It should already be mapped out and the recruitment team should be well underway with negotiation.

I honestly think the recruitment model is that the club give Moyes a list of players for each position and asks him to rank them in preference.

It explains why we ended up with 3rd/4th choices in Barry (Delap, Woltemade, Abraham turned us down) Dibling (fofana, Doak turned us down), Right Back(?) (Tete Trippier, Walker), CM Oreilly, Hamer, Diarra).

Moyes was vocal about slow progress in the summer and Kinnear, in January, seemed to suggest that Moyes had rejected a lot of targets.

Strikes me that Moyes doesn't have full control but has final say from a pool of about 4 or 5.

Nothing suggests the manager and club are aligned on transfers.

Palace are in talks with that Pierre Sage from Lens
So that's another Manager off peoples wish lists.

Scouting 'Uber Eats' it is than
Yeah it's going to be Moyes getting sacked in October so instead of bringing in a quality manager in the summer to replace him we'll scramble for a caretaker manager to get through the season, this club is so predictable

…or he’s just not been very good in all aspects of his game.
Then why did he approve the second most expensive Everton transfer then? It puts on questions on Moyes not Dibling, also it feels Moyes is trying to turn him into long term project like coleman was, but he's not a 60k obscure footballer from Ireland, he was a very known expensive talent that played a season in the EPL, so you can't keep him on the sidelines for a year

Are you suggesting if Moyes asked for Mbappe, Haaland or Yamal he might be told they can’t be recruited and he’s have to look at other options?
