Like I've said many times before I highly doubt Moyes saw him playing for Southampton and told TFG to go get him whatever the price.

UEFA actually count playing in European Cup as part of their champions League stats so Everton played in it twice under Catterick. https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/history/clubs/52281--everton/
