You're the New Manager. How do you Rebuild?

…..I do think it’s a bit more difficult than just selecting a new manager because he still has to deal with players he’s left with or will be given. Moyes has largely had to work with what he inherited to this point (not withstanding a mixed window last summer).

I presume in a computer game you can sell players for decent money and easily buy others with monies generated. Bit more difficult in reality. I think we’ll know more after this summers transfer window and how successful this ‘committee’ is.

There’s a dependency on ‘ins and outs’.
He got rid of 11 players and signed Grealish, Dibling, Barry, George, Aznou, Travers, KDH, King, Alcaraz.

He played 3 of them and Barry was mostly through necessity.

He/the club (as I'm unsure who dictates recruitment) had a great opportunity last summer to shape a team and made a mess of it either because the players aren't good or the manager doesn't like the players (or both).

But having watched the players, I cannot see why they weren't played more.

Start with establishing expectations. Mentality is to win every match obviously. Need to add pace and athleticism, got to cover more ground, press higher, play direct and focus on repressing. Always thinking get at the space in behind and play forward asap. Little bit more appetite for risk.

Shift Patterson, Keane, Mykolenko, McNeil, Barry, possibly one of Iroegbunam / Alcaraz & possibly let Gueye go. Ndiaye would be a tough loss but might have to take 60mm+ for him. But if we do not do the Grealish deal, keep him on.

GK : Pickford, Travers, King
DEF : Tarkowski, O'Brien, Branthwaite, CB*, LB*, Aznou, RB*, RB* | Fullbacks : T. Devlin, O. El Hilali, A. Wan-Bissaka, H. Fort, Q. Merlin, M. Bard, N. Brown & CBs : C. Creswell or M. Senesi or L. Benedetti
MID : Garner, Dewsbury-Hall, Armstrong, Alcaraz / Iroegbunam, Rohl, CM* | CMs : M. Sangare, C. Mouzakitis, R. Rios, H. Hackney
FWDs : LW* , Ndiaye or Grealish*, ST*, Beto, Dibling, RW*, Versatile FWD* | Wingers : O. Pieutuszewski, B. Toure, D. Osorio, T. George, A. Diao & STs : Richarlison, A. Gonzalez, or R. Jimenez with J. Panichelli to target in January

But I guess I'm signing unproven PL players, so we'll be down by December .

1. Fix the defensive structure, secure the dressing room leadership post-Coleman, and evaluate which current squad players fit the long-term vision.

2. Shift the transfer strategy entirely toward high-intensity, young, and technically proficient players. Resolve the status of crucial loanees like Grealish and George.

3. Transition the team's identity from a low-block, pragmatic style to a modern, high-pressing, fluid system that excites the fans in the new stadium.

4. Establish Everton as a perennial top-7 challenger, utilizing the revenue from the new stadium and a self-sustaining player-trading model to consistently play in European competitions.

The Ultimate Goal: To take Everton from a club that "survives and stabilizes" to a modern, aggressive, data-driven footballing powerhouse that honors its status as "The People's Club" while competing at the very top of European football.

Right, where's the contract? Show me the blue ink!

….why I said we’ll have to see how this new ‘committee’ does in this window. Two key recruiting personnel only joined after last summer. Moyes was clearly part of the process last year and is accountable for that, largely disappointing but a bit of a mixed bag.

11 players is a lot of churn and turmoil in one window, quite a clear-out. Let’s see how it goes with new appointments playing key roles.

Boo!
'you're' out
I appreciate you’re joking but herein lies the problem.

Sometimes it’s ok to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I’m sure some people will read this as settling for mediocrity, but it isn’t. If we are serious about regaining our previous status and winning things, then it simply has to be a measured process and not one where we sack everyone at the first sign of the slightest setback (ie not getting Europe when we still need a stronger squad for it).

We mustn’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

Be able to slot Graham in as an inside left/inverted winger like that too mate, see how he handles pre-season.
The only way Graham plays is as a 2nd striker in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

I agree with the iguana fella , with 2 specialist wing backs and a decent CF we have the squad the play with 3 at the back.

Graham isn't ready for the first team yet but I could see him challenging for the 2nd striker in that system in a year or 2.

For me, a rebuild is a long term project and starts with stability. Year one is about adding a few high quality signings and developing a solid and consistent team with emphasis on defence. Year 2 is about building on that, bringing in more quality in the weaker areas of the squad, along side promoting/developing the best young players from the youth sides (Armstrong/Graham).

It is disappointing, how we finished last season, and I'd agree that there was a few frustrating decisions made (or not made) in the last 7 games, but on the whole, with the squad we have, I don't think it was a bad year 1. Particular positives being the away form and the fact we were never under any pressure from the drop, counteracted against very disappointing home form and the weak end to the season. Hopefully the club has enough ambition to really push on and accelerate the progress into year 2. Weak areas identified as the FB positions, pace at CB and better options to provide a goal threat (RW, LW, CF).

Its a big summer for the club, so fingers crossed for some exciting signings in key areas and an upturn in that home form next season.

….i think he could more easily fill a wider position, not as a conventional winger but in much the same way Richarlison did to good effect. No doubting his industry or attitude, no10 is a possible but a wide role much more likely if he does make the step up.

Chasing a goal and coming off the bench, certainly more central if required.

I hope it's smoother. That would be my priority in the rebuild.

I sensed a lot of tension between a Moyes, Kinnear and the recruitment team last summer and throughout the season.

I know Moyes has been keen to stress he has final say, but I do wonder if that's within parameters set by the club - i.e. The club give him a list of players and he chooses. Whatever it is, it needs sorting for this summer.

It should already be mapped out and the recruitment team should be well underway with negotiation.

Assuming similar formation:

GK's -Stick
RB New, as good as we can get, sell Patterson, and replace with a promising youngster, or keep as backup
LB Keep Myko there whilst Aznou's bloodied on the wing
CB Buy as good as possible with pace to compete with Branners and O'Brien, sell one of the others
CM Garner and KDH. Keep Rohl and Tim unless something else crops up.
LW Aznou for now, sharing the birth maybe with someone like Monga/Graham
RW N'diaye of he's still here, buy youngish competitor
10 Alcaraz with Dibling (not much hope for him i'm afraid) N'diaye or KDH covering if we can't afford/promote one
CF Beto, see if he can regain his magic with Alcaraz from 12months ago. Barry's probably going on a risky submarine adventure as mentioned above. Take a spin on one/two young low profile strikers that can also play under 21's.

So the same team then?
