Recruit younger (not teenagers, but early-twenties) players who are hungry, on an upward trajectory, ready for an opportunity to step up and take more responsibility, and are team players, even occasionally taking their AirPods out when in company. The Championship would be my first port of call - Semenyo was still there at 23, Eze at 22, Olise plucked from there too. I’d supplement that with the odd player closer to their peak to set standards and provide leadership. I’d tell them how a similar squad forty years ago was transformed by the decision to go on the front foot, press the life out of the opposition and become one of the best teams we’ve ever had and how history was now going to repeat itself, as history tends to do. And then I’d smear blue paint on my face, break into Anfield at night, plant a flag in the centre circle and shout “yippee ki-yay mo-fos! Yippee ki-yaaaaaaay!”
