Has happened already in Ireland
Pubs voluntarily shut
Restaurants only doing take away or delivery
Food shops open. 2m distancing meant to be in operation

Hopefully we'll get through it

Yep am Irish too... Unreal how quickly everything just stopped...all pubs & restaurants closed for the St Patrick's weekend, never thought I'd see that...

At least they are actually publishing good data on it, i genuinely think that will go a long way. The cummings way has always been one of disinformation and muddying waters and headlines while hiding key political figures from making gaffes, but hopefully the government are seeing that getting as much info as possible out there that explains the thinking behind their approach. It certainly feels alot better reading the imperial paper than listening to that big fodded chode matt hancock stumble through a subject he quite clearly knows nothing about

It's probably best to keep the politicians out of this where possible as it's not their field at all (whatever their field actually is).

I think the worst possible way to deal with it is by doing very little and just accept infection by millions.

Take Korea as example, their numbers drop once measures were implemented. it’s just a choice between short term tough restriction or long term suffering with relax regulation.

Definitely ways to prevent millions of infection, the will to do so is weak

I'm not saying accept it in the sense of not taking steps to slow it down. But the virus is already here and we haven't done enough in the early stages of the outbreak (you know, like 3-4 weeks back now) to slow it down. So all we can do now is what we can and even that likely won't be enough.

The only way to beat this for now is to get it. If not you just have to have a population of 70m in hiding. How is that going to work over a period of months?

Children will pass it on to each other then bring it home to parents and grandparents.
Many of whom might work in vital services- health, police, haulage, warehousing, food retail

Its very common sense.
Close the schools, stop people socially interacting

And how long can this go on for?

70m people in a very small country.

Seems a fair assessment from the University of Liverpool.
All this really emphasises is that if we listened to the screeching voices, we'd actually be putting ourselves in greater risk in the long haul. I was reading a paper a while ago on the work of Igel Semmelweis, he'd proposed that washing hands was actually really important to do in a hospital setting to prevent deaths in child birth and had scientific data that backed it up. The contemporaries of the day were up in arms about this and protested that his scientific findings were a load of hoo-hah. It seems that we are in a similar situation where the scientific community is saying one thing, but because it flies in the face of 'common sense' it's being derided.

You panic buying hoarders make me sick! :D

I'm not a professional graph reader but I'd take the blue one over the black one for the sake of 4 extra weeks.

Aye, the thing is I have absolutely no clue how they expect to be able to spread it out into June now.

They haven't been testing enough at all.

So while it's a good plan in theory I think the peak will still come in April rather than May-June. Hopefully the NHS can still manage in that case.

It's helpful because of the wet market trade which enabled this. Pressure needs to be put on China to permanently ban the practice.

I agree but it's very difficult to enforce. And by referring it to a "china virus" you run the risk of blanket prejudice. Which has very real ramifications for business and ethnic groups.

I think the prejudice is required to ensure the change happens in this scenario. If China think they can get away with doing nothing, they'll do nothing.

Through their policies they have caused a crisis to all humanity here. They need to be accountable for it, given this is now happening pretty regularly for the same reasons.

^ this is a good watch.

the running mad professor knows his stuff, had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and he’s ridiculously educated in the field.

A good piece, now only if the general public read that rather than listened to Barbara from Somerset, who posts jarg info on Facebook
