There was an interesting observation on Talksport earlier. (Yeah, I know).

It was an English bloke who worked in St Petersburg, for the club iirc. Anyrate, after he had talked about some on line game of Connect 4 with Stoke, he was asked about this virus.

He said Russia is not arsed. They have hardly any cases.Despite a massive land border with China, and a huge number of Chinese at Russian universities. He reckoned they had already had it, but no one noticed cos Russia gets poorly every single winter anyrate.

Food for thought.
In Soviet Russia.....

I think a lot of places are going to try and stay open but it’s supply and demand , it’s simply whether it’s economically viable .

I think you’ll see quite a few open for a bit longer yet , the advice seemed to be to ‘avoid‘ which depending on how you interpret potentially seems to stop short of telling people to cease going in completely.
I will be drinking this weekend one way or another, will be cracking up by then!

Sad times we live in, still seems surreal tbh

Not just you my friend , the idea of not going out for months seems mind blowing frankly and yeah surreal .

The overall impact on our lives and our society in such a short time Is staggering . It’s gone from being a bit of a punchline ,to life changing in double quick time .

Sadly though this is another big problem... The Zoos and aquariums, etc.are all going to close for months. Where is their income gonna come from to pay their staff to continue working to mind the animals, to feed the animals?...

bars , restaurants, cafes , independent coffee shops , sports clubs , taxi drivers , lower league football teams , rugby league teams the list goes on and on and for many their will simply be no coming back . The billionaire Branson has asked for his bail out though .

Kudos to our Government Department HR for this... much of the advice applies to every one of us ( I have deleted contact details obvs.) EAS excellent - on duty today, the National Holiday.

Subject: COVID -19 - Support for staff

Dear Colleagues;

The constantly evolving COVID -19 situation is a time of uncertainty and extreme concern for all of us. Times of uncertainty such as we are now experiencing can bring about feelings of fear, stress, anger, helplessness and indeed a feeling of being overwhelmed.

It is important to remember to take good care of yourself and your loved ones during this time. Some tips that may be helpful at this time include:

  • Acknowledge your feelings of fear, anxiety etc. and understand that these feelings are normal emotional reactions at this time.
  • Stay connected with family and friends by telephone, skype WhatsApp etc. This is especially important if you are in self-isolation or become ill.
  • Source your information on COVID – 19 from reliable sources such as www.hse.ie, the World Health Organisation www.who.int and the Department of Health.
  • Consider taking regular breaks from the constant media coverage of COVID – 19 and also a break from social media.
  • Participate in activities you enjoy e.g. walk, listen to music, read a book, write, art, dance, bake, run, sing, meditation, yoga, exercise, watch a film/comedy.
  • Be mindful of nature and the onset of Spring.
  • Eat regular nourishing meals and get plenty of rest and sleep

  • The Civil Service Employee Assistance Service (CSEAS) is available to support you at this unprecedented time.

Telephone xxxxx where you will be able to speak to an Employee Assistance Officer in confidence.

Employee Assistance Officers will be on duty from 9am -8pm every weekday and from 12pm – 4pm Saturday and Sunday.

Employee Assistance Officers will be on duty tomorrow St. Patrick’s Day from 10am to 6pm.

Remember you are not alone at this time, please reach out and seek confidential support. Be kind to yourself and take good care.

Very best wishes

So self isolate
Don’t go to places where there is many people
Wash your hands
Stay away from pubs clubs restaurants

BUT We won’t order you to close any of the above because then we will be liable for many insurance claims, so instead keep open all of your small business’s but we’re telling everyone to stay clear!!!

Seriously that’s the F ‘Kin’ message from our leader..

Oh and kids keep going to school.

The key is to reduce it isn’t it, there’s no way to stop it unless it is reduce first. Those that reject any form of measures are not coming out with solutions to stop it either.

That's the point though, and the Imperial paper clearly states this. They don't believe the suppression (ie lockdown) approach is sustainable, and certainly not for the ~18 months they believe it will take for a vaccine to be ready. We've spoken at length on other threads about the health implications of austerity and poverty, and such a lockdown would cause poverty on a nationwide scale.

Like I said, there isn't really an easy way out of this situation, and the Imperial team are clear that locking down the country for a (relatively) short period won't result in this thing going away. It's not a case of the government's approach having this outcome (x number of deaths) and lockdown resulting in 0 deaths. Not at all.

Sadly though this is another big problem... The Zoos and aquariums, etc.are all going to close for months. Where is their income gonna come from to pay their staff to continue working to mind the animals, to feed the animals?...

Indeed. Lockdown advocates are basically asking the government to prop up vast numbers of organisations, and the people who are/used to be employed by them. That's a level of welfare that's unprecedented and I'm not sure just how feasible it is.
