It's down to time x distance:

Vallance:

“The risk at one metre is about 10 to 30 times higher than the risk at two metres, so social distancing is an important part of this.” “The evidence is, as far as you can get very firm evidence on this, is essentially a minute at two metres contact is about the same as six seconds at one metre." 5th May.

The time element is key, and something (as your link explains to you if you'd read it) that was omitted from the Lancet study:

"While the finding from the Lancet paper offer support for the current UK recommendation, it is important to recognise that the study had some limitations. For instance, the authors were unable to assess the effect of exposure duration since this factor varied considerably".

Interesting that you quote Vallance.

This Vallance scumbag on the need or otherwise of face masks. Typical of the vague BS analysis and advice that witch doctor and his fellow charlatan Whitty have handed out throughout this catastrophe they've overseen.

So Germany is making it compulsory to wear face masks...but the United Kingdom Banana Republic still wont advocate it because they're being led by the science...the science headed up by two discredited chuckle heads called Whitty and Vallance.

Whitty and Vallance need lynching. No question. Two nodding dogs.

It makes no difference to my point, which is made by many more people than Vallance, btw.

Space x Time = infection threat rate.

The problem with Vallance isn't his knowledge, just his unwillingness to stand up to the politicians and enforce it.

Its about the only thing I agree with you about. Its so flaming obvious.
Sober reading here.

No doubt the whore will back off from this now and we wont see him pipe up. But there it is from 6 weeks ago.

...and, btw, you agree with me about most things other than your devotion to the Tory Party. :coffee:

Devotion to what now?

The risk doubles going by a study in the Lancet.

https://hospitalhealthcare.com/covid-19/should-the-2m-social-distancing-rule-be-relaxed/

Any source for your "claim" that it increases the risk 'ten-fold'?
There's a virologist based at Cambridge University called Chris Smith who is absolutely brilliant at explaining things in simple English. He's quite often on TV, not sure if you've ever seen him.

He was on BBC news this morning explaining the risks involved in moving social distancing to 1m. He said 1m SD reduces the risk of catching the disease by 94%, and 2m SD reduces the risk by 97%. So looked at from another perspective, by moving from 2m to 1m SD, you're increasing the risk of infection from 3% to 6%, so yeah doubling it.

Every time I listen to Chris Smith I get this feeling of the scientists have some idea what they're doing, and then I come in here. lol

Distancing in pubs will be difficult unless the number of people in the place at any time is limited.
À crowded pub is very noisy, conversations take place with people having to shout into each others face.
Only safe with seating at well spaced tables and waiter service, no jostling at the bar.
TBH I've already told the missus that we're only going out on nice days when we can sit outside to start with. Best err on the side of caution until we see what happens with infection rates. Also, if a bar is too full most people my age I'm sure will just walk away. Younger ones are a different matter as they aren't affected quite the same so won't have the fear factor.

That’s all it takes mate, a bit of common sense.

Somewhere looks too busy, you don’t go in.

You’re in somewhere that starts to fill up, you leave.

Somewhere looks too busy, you don’t go in - unless its full of horny cougars

You’re in somewhere that starts to fill up, you leave - unless it fills up with horny cougars in which you set up base camp for the night

Fixed for you my friend

To be fair, the staff should be telling you they're full. The capacity is calculated to include social distancing.

The first 2 weeks over here have been mainly people parking themselves at a table for the evening. No more bar hopping, at least not at the moment, because you're not guaranteed to get in anywhere. It's great actually, the owners can just tell any real problem customers to sod off before they even get in. No point having one mardy old sod who makes trouble sat drinking by himself when you can have 4 people on that table.
