we were told how it wasn’t an issue when he was unwell but I understand it’s at least feasible they weren’t truthful . My concerns are raised when we’re told he’s speaking to say trump and then we have messages leaked to the press that he’s wanting this or that but we then see minister say they’ve not spoken to him for days . If he’s unwell then despite my dislike then obviously that’s not good but he has to formally relinquish control and let someone run things or otherwise we’re effectively caught between two stools and that can’t be good at any time but specifically at times of a national crisis .

Aye, I wouldn't argue with any of that. I'm not sure there is really a succession plan for this kind of thing (not sure if that's not a parliament thing rather than a Tory thing though?), and the communication around his illness has been muddled, even before you get into the cult like clap for Boris nonsense. The logic would be for him to go off and focus on recovering, leaving his role as PM to someone else. Not sure quite how feasible that is though, even aside from the hero worship of the man within the Tory party.

What I don't really understand is why this thing has resulted in such an uprising in nationalism. Germany had a test developed as early as January, yet many other nations, including Britain and the US, decided to develop their own test instead. While there is an element of logic to that so that you avoid buying dodgy stuff, as the Spanish did with the test from Bioeasy, it does obviously add a delay to proceedings. This delay also meant that the global market for the raw materials for testing hotted up. Germany has a strong industry in both biotech and chemicals, so would be arguably the main manufacturer of these raw materials in Europe, which again perhaps explains why they are so far ahead of Britain.

It's also arguable that the Robert Koch Institute is better suited to this kind of task than Public Health England. As was explained recently on NPR ()

“We have a culture here in Germany that is not supporting a centralized diagnostic system. So Germany does not have a public health laboratory that would restrict other labs from doing the tests.”

Much the same point was made last night on Newsnight (the decentralisation argument). There was a CEO of a small diagnostic company in the south of England (needless to say, has never been contacted by HM Government) who stated that his lab could produce 10,000 tests pw. Those type of facilities in the private sector are numerous up and down the country. The advanatage of that also is that there is no mega testing centre in a region that people wanting tests need to travel to...basically, they are that local it's a case of taking the test to them.

It's institutionalised crime we are seeing here by this government.

I laid into you out of the logic of it not what the police were doing you strange creature.
Yet it was the logic of it that made the police response heavy handed you equally strange creature.

Anyway the government has now confirmed that I was right and you were wrong so sniff it, as one of our esteemed fellow posters likes to say

I wasn't aware there was a MERS, but makes sense as there is one for SARS - just never went into full production as the infection died off. I'm sure that's the same for MERS.

I think it's been 3 weeks or so (maybe a bit less) since the first human trials on a COVID 19 vaccine started. There are easily 100s in development.

Absolute ton of money in it for the first to market.
Does anybody know how long it will take from starting human trials (assuming they are successful ) to the vaccine being rolled out .
Also if a University develops it will they make the formula and method freely available to all manufacturers or will we be dependant on one manufacturer.
If its only 1 that obviously constrains manufacture and delivery
Would all vaccine makers be tooled up to make a coronavirus vaccine

TBF there is an awful lot of opportunity now for scams; the Government should absolutely be finding out who can genuinely help but a lot of these “I have a million masks / 10000 tests a day” claims are likely to be complete BS merchants or people who have been scammed themselves (especially these “brokers” of PPE).

Well the one I saw looked bona fide.

Take a look at the report (6m into this video):

I kinda suspect if Trump has his way, it'll be Martin Shkreli like exploitation.
