African American fatalities in California under 50s account for 19% deaths when only make up 6% of population :( This despite only making up 5% pf recorded cases. Latino fatalities also elevated proportional to population

Common problem....a potentially dangerous medication so patients have to be pretty sick to warrant trying it when you don’t know if it is going to work.

This was more or less my thought when I saw the study results - doubling lethality seemed unlikely to be caused by the medication when that is not what other preliminary studies are turning up. It's more likely a research design problem where the authors were getting consent to try something unproven when the situation is already dire, and they did not control for that. (Hard to fault them; a pandemic is not the best scenario for conducting research.)

Trial results so far have been mixed -- about equal between benefit and no benefit.
None of those trials have been a well designed trial, but that happens at this stage. There are several good trials underway.

The analysis I posted was a retrospective review so even lower level of evidence, but does tell professionals to pump the breaks on use until we get better data as there may actually be harm.

Two coronavirus-infected people died in Santa Clara County on Feb. 6 and Feb. 17, the medical examiner revealed Tuesday, making them first documented COVID-19 fatalities in the United States.
Until now, the first fatality was believed to have occurred in Kirkland, Wash., on Feb. 29.

So likely mid to late Jan they were infected. Article doesn’t make clear if they personally had a travel history or if they caught it locally. Presumably the latter since otherwise they might have been tested earlier although our testing then was almost non-existent.

Germany are ramping up again on the testing: looking to test 4.5 million per week.

UK testing capacity stuck at between 20,000 and 30,000 per day.

The government of this country are an absolute disgrace. They've turned us into a banana republic.

You do understand that Germany has an abundance of testing capabilities that we simply don't have

What I don't really understand is why this thing has resulted in such an uprising in nationalism. Germany had a test developed as early as January, yet many other nations, including Britain and the US, decided to develop their own test instead. While there is an element of logic to that so that you avoid buying dodgy stuff, as the Spanish did with the test from Bioeasy, it does obviously add a delay to proceedings. This delay also meant that the global market for the raw materials for testing hotted up. Germany has a strong industry in both biotech and chemicals, so would be arguably the main manufacturer of these raw materials in Europe, which again perhaps explains why they are so far ahead of Britain.

It's also arguable that the Robert Koch Institute is better suited to this kind of task than Public Health England. As was explained recently on NPR ()

“We have a culture here in Germany that is not supporting a centralized diagnostic system. So Germany does not have a public health laboratory that would restrict other labs from doing the tests.”

They appear to have abundance of everything in dealing with this virus effectively... The UK is probably second to Trump America in dealing with this world wide crisis. We should only compare ourselves to Trump America, it's better for the group think.

Yes it is. There is great deal of nutritional difference in value chicken to the top of the range chicken that any super market sell, this is reflected in prices right across all products and ranges. What your trying to convey is eating healthier. Most people can make chicken nuggets from a chicken breast, however, the nutrition values won't differ because it's been made at home value is less nutritional and top of the range is more nutritious Eating healthy cost money.
People are focussing on nutritional value a lot but time is also a factor for eating healthily. Rich people have a lot more time. Resources are a factor, time is a factor, education is a factor.

the fact is there is a huge correlation between economics and health.

that isn’t directed at you by the way. it’s not directed at anyone. Just making the point.

If any future Government do not learn from - the biggest error of all time our manufacturing industries are non existent , and buy in from cheap scab labour countries - started of by Thatchesr nation of shop keepers ..... carried on by Blair - destroyed by Cameron , Clagg and OSBORNE ... they will never learn - we have sold off the family silver and are now paying the price bigtime...... over a killer virus that we cannot provide homemade simple PPE!
This is getting so easy its frightening lol
