They did indeed. As I posted the other day, their work with Gorbachev in starting to reduce the number of nukes was a real step in the right direction. Shame it was not continued

As I said, the group includes a sub-clause such that other states are only obliged to come to another's aid if they are attacked in the North Atlantic area, so they had no recourse to NATO assistance.

Don't mess with the Turk's
There is a precedent for NATO getting involved in non-NATO disputes. NATO led a coalition to bomb Libya in 2011 and also created a no-fly zone. This is strange in retrospect given the situation today. But it certainly angered Putin and probably made him much more skeptical of NATO than any simple nation-enlargement per se. I had read this in a few articles that I tracked down.
