I know it is better than waging physical war, as the tragic scenes from multiple war zones attest, but many ordinary Russians lives will be devastated through no fault of their own and probably wouldn’t have supported if they had the free choice.

Agree, a huge portion of them are innocent victims of this too. Hope it doesnt last too long for everyones sake

Haven’t seen any official confirmation of this, or its cause.

Sabotage? Or a false flag operation to pin the blame on Ukraine to stoke up support?

Very strange though

The economic and financial sanctions aren't gonna turn regular Russians against Putin at all. It's just gonna anger them more and make them turn against the West. Read up what Treaty of Versailles after WW1 did to the Germans.
Maybe not right away, and maybe not by ordinary Russians, but once the Oligarchs that have been financing Putin for all these years don’t have a way to travel abroad, send their children to the US, Europe or the UK for University, are not able to vacation on their large yachts or have all their luxuries they will be the ones putting a prize on Putin’s head, the guy is not invincible either, as Ukrainians have already proved.

Unfortunately it is still unlikely according to those who study these things but it is likely to complicate Putin’s long term plans for Ukraine or invasion of other countries

Prices are already soaring among alot of essentials with rumours of potential food shortages for the West too. All for something that's barely going to change the outcome for Putin anyway. With Russian - Chinese economic cooperation it'll be us that bare the ill effect of sanctions not Russia, this will be especially noticeable in mainland Europe. There has to be another way.

It really is. Russian ETF's have crashed here. No way could their stock market open Monday.

Their economy has already been pushed back a couple of years at least.

Opening the stockmarket anytime soon would be comical.

I don't think Russians are this innocent people that people keep banging on about. Russians actively condone Putin, Russians actively support Putin, Russians actively believe that Ukraine should be a part of Russia. Russians have full access to the world media as well as their censorship is nowhere as bad as China.
Those protests that you see in Russia are very small-scale and nothing for a nation as big as 147M. Most Russians cheered on Putin when he annexed Crimea in 2014. People who expect Russians to rise up against Putin and start a revolution are simply living in cloud cuckoo land and don't know about the reality at all.

Doesnt sound like youve been to China.

Clueless.

Absolutley heartbreaking, and that's in just one city.

While the west continues to sit on our hands and offer mealy mouthed platitudes and outcry but in reality do nothing aside from the financial sanctions that will only really hurt working class russians, and all the while innocent Ukranians and Russians are being killed for a war neither of them wanted.

The firing into the nuclear plant shoud have been the final straw in relation to the west taking military action.

Putin needs a bullet putting in his demented brain.

I hope one of the high ranking russians has a sudden attack of conscience and does the right thing to end this tragedy.

Slava Ukraini!

It was in the media that Trump was quoted saying he got on with Putin and Xi but told them that if they stepped out of line hed not back down. If they threaten nuclear, so would he.

Also he said that even if they believed him 5% or 10% then it was enough to put doubts in their minds.

Contrast that with Biden refusing to speak with Putin, calling Ukraine 'Iran' and effectively saying nothing would happen if it wasnt a full scale attack.

Nothing happened under Trump. Biden doesnt even know what country hes talking about.

You think Russia wont bear "the ill effect of sanctions"

:o

Ive seen this narrative a few times "working class Russians"...every Russian will be impacted by the sanctions.

Every single one of them.

Why clueless?

You talk about China but clearly havent been.

You belittle the sanctions yet clearly dont understand them.

Which country are you from as it seems like youre from the moon.

The whole 'screw it' philosophy is something I simply can't see him doing. He may be a despot and he does rule over an autocratic state, but he's a parent.

Launching a nuclear weapon against Ukraine or even using a smaller tactical device would likely lead to retaliation from their adversaries with nuclear weapons.

The US, ourselves and France would cause the annihilation of the Russian state and that could easily (well likely) result in the death of his family and friends.

I've met some really fluffled up people in my life, including some pretty vile human beings, but I can't think of many who'd willingly let their children die.

Nor could I see all his cronies let him get that far, for the same reason.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure his family will be in a bunker if he does decide to press a button. We just don't know, perhaps he thinks the world is over populated and eventually a shortage of resources would lead to a humanitarian disaster anyhow? It's impossible to know what they think and what they are fed to be able to guess what they think is justifiable in their own crazy little way.

My estimate was for tomorrow (Monday) the bite in the economy to be seen and felt by the Russian people.

I had expected there to be more protests but my thinking was that walking through Moscow and seeing big brands shuttered would shock the public.

In addition, payment and transaction routes cut off, large numbers of job losses throughout all areas of logistics and the casualties building up in Ukraine.

Surprised weve not heard more about runs on the banks.

Tomorrow I think Russians will have their eyes opened.

My friend in Moscow has said that things have deteriorated already. Prices have doubled, they are looking to move to Turkey by April.

Never said they won't affect all russians mate, but they will only really hurt the common man - same story the world over.

I also don't think Putin give two Fuchs about them either, he knew they were coming as we threatened him with then for weeks and he still invaded and declared war - he's taking the piss out of the entire world.

Sure, so do you want to enlighten me on China then?

I clearly do understand the sanctions imposed on the Russians and I'm just saying that the sanctions will have the opposite impact on your average Russian citizen. How do you refute that?

Its a powder keg in Russia now with a lot of people now anti-putin and sentiment growing against him from all sides -- but of course fearful.

If there are a lot more casualties then i think that stokes the fire and those families of the victims will be heard.

He's looked at Biden and thought "this guy will let me do anything here, hes spineless".

Biden quoted as saying if its not a full scale attack then "ok".

Putin goes in...

I think hes been stunned by the economic response though. Doubt he actually counted on this level of a financial attack.

The key has been some of the European leaders getting behind Ukraine 100% and then a domino effect across countries and industries.

I think the poorer population in Russia wont feel this as hard as the middle class.

The middle class will be absolutely reeling.
