He can’t fire it. Someone else has to actually do that. I appreciate that he has nothing like the checks and balances of the USA President nor the U.K. PM, but he cannot just do it on his own……

Yes I know that, but if they have multiple warheads and missiles, then you are relying on multiple people refusing orders and probably being executed.

The point is, nobody knows if he's making empty threats or is serious, which is why everyone is treading lightly

I can't talk about military strategy, or financial implications or even geopolitics with much more than a newsreader's understanding, but this is actually somewhat in my wheelhouse.

One of the ramifications of this is in cyber warfare. Russia's forays into it are well known as a proactive disrupter, but its now got to contend with large parts of Russia PLC, government, and perhaps even lower tier military becoming increasingly vulnerable to attack as PCs, servers, routers, firewalls etc stop receiving updates. Not to mention cloud security solutions, SOCs, consultancy, application management etc. Anonymous will be limbering up....
I’d also presume that Russian tech workers that could help fix some of the issues would be overrepresented in those bugging out of Russian too as the ruble declines - often younger, more Westernized and with a skill set that is more geographically transferable than some other trades.

Putin is quite unpredictable. There is no way he will want to fail in Ukraine, or be seen as weak and a failure. Plus he's 70 years old this year. There is every chance he could say screw it and just fire off a nuclear weapon.
The whole 'screw it' philosophy is something I simply can't see him doing. He may be a despot and he does rule over an autocratic state, but he's a parent.

Launching a nuclear weapon against Ukraine or even using a smaller tactical device would likely lead to retaliation from their adversaries with nuclear weapons.

The US, ourselves and France would cause the annihilation of the Russian state and that could easily (well likely) result in the death of his family and friends.

I've met some really fluffled up people in my life, including some pretty vile human beings, but I can't think of many who'd willingly let their children die.

Nor could I see all his cronies let him get that far, for the same reason.

Very much so. They'll retain a lot of offensive hacking skills but this is a very different prospect and one I doubt they've prepared for.

Im not saying its likely for all the reasons you have stated. But nobody can say its very unlikely either. Not Russian experts, Military or Intelligence experts, as they have all said he's unpredictable.

Is he likely to admit defeat? From everything thats been said about him, I doubt it. So what does he do? Hopefully follows Hitler's lead

He’s going to have a tough time spinning “war time measures” to the Russian people when they aren’t allowed to call it a “war”

“Yes, these are emergency ‘intervention’ measures” :hayee:
We've probably given him all the ammo needed with sanctions, Truss saying Brits could fight, and that US Senator saying someone should off him from within. It'll be "the devil Westerners want us dead, we are taking emergency measures to protect our people etc "

Imagine how fuming Comrade General Putin is sat in the Kremlin right now…

Thought he and his armed forces would be treated as liberators by Ukrainians - It’s generated the most incredible national unity and togetherness I’ve ever seen. He’s now one of the most despised men on the planet.

Thought he’d be mission accomplished in hours - We’re a week plus on without Russia capturing a single major city

Thought the world would stand by and watch with no reaction - Universal sanctions agreed and enforced by all. Western countries pumping weapons and intel into Ukraine. Germans drop €100bn boost on defence over the next few years purely off the back of this invasion.

Thought they’d have the cash in the bank to weather any sanctions - Rouble crashes and their banks are paralysed.

Thought that this invasion would be a display of Russian military might - Shown themselves to be utterly incompetent and a cowardly laughing stock.

Also probably didn’t dream in a million years that privately owned companies would decide to cease operations in Russia off their own backs.

I can’t see how this could have gone any worse for the weird little goblin.

Fk Putin, Up the Ukraine!

We need to completely cut Russia off from the West. There are still sales of oil etc coming from him. We need the cut to be absolute, nothing goes in, nothing comes out. Treat them as a non country and do not allow a single penny to be spent or transferred from the west. Then tell China that if they allow him to continue they will get the same treatment. Then China and Russia can just trade with each other and both will regress. We created this over the last 30 years, pumping money into ‘investments’ in their countries that allowed them to steal technology and grow their money supply. Just cut the whole thing off…..

Why is Boris taking so long to do this then?
