Not sure why this is a "Ukrainian news reporting...." this referendum has been widely reported for weeks
❗️Referendum in Belarus will take place tomorrow - 27.02. РімIn addition to voting for amendments to the constitution, there is a possibility of creating a "union state" with Russia, which in turn will lead to the active participation of Belarus in the war with Ukraine.
‼ ️We repeat: INFORMATION WILL BE KNOWN ONLY TOMORROW.

☝?It already means that we are stronger than Russia, which is dragging ballast behind Belarus.

???We are ready for anything, and we are already supported by a large number of countries!

This is the message I got (google translated) in a Ukrainian News Viber group that Ukrainian journalists are posting in, it has over 1.5 mil members

We (the West) need to urgently (at least as urgently as helping Ukraine and organizing sanctions) find some way for him to get out of this mess he has created, not "peace with honor" but something that can take into account what Russia feels about NATO encirclement and guide them down a better path.

Hopefully back channels are being left open to try and give Putin what could be conceivably reported to his people as a win and an immediate withdrawal can take place and the nastiest sanctions can be lifted. That probably means giving up the two regions but I can't see any way Ukraine get to keep them as things stand.

If resolved hopefully the whole mess makes him think twice before starting on any future endeavours and hopefully age/health and public opinion can help put the final nails in. It also allows us time to unify and build stronger defences and processes to help with any future altercations.

I genuinely think the universal condemnation and focus, the combined western response with weapons and sanctions (albeit slow), the total lack of support from China, the anti war feeling in Russia, the effort of the Ukrainian army and the will of the people to resist any occupation has caught Putin with his pants down and his little 2 inch pecker out.

It’s basically him and his little bitch boy in Belarus versus the world.

If the banking sanctions kick in asap, the Ruble won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on, all imports and exports will stop dead and his army grinds to an embarrassing halt in the middle of an illegal invasion.

Aye, I’m not smart enough to know how we could have avoided this spiral but sure hope we can find a way to stop it escalating

Short of capitulation, the spiral was unavoidable from its position at the beginning of the year. If you're talking time machine stuff, some negotiations between the US and Russia were in order. The purpose would have been to figure out a roadmap that would address Putin's security concerns while not crossing the red line of ceding sovereignty by letting Putin dictate NATO membership. I don't think it was doable, because Putin would have wanted us to give up some weapons systems that we're not giving up, but a different tack by the US in dealing with Russia was advisable.

As to stopping it from escalating, here are some thoughts:

- Give up on the war crimes rhetoric. Backing Putin into a corner is an incredibly terrible idea.
- Find an off-ramp leading back to normalization. Reparations, the repatriation of occupied portions of eastern Ukraine and the demilitarization of Belarus, the Russian oblasts bordering the Baltics and Ukraine probably have to happen. That will be tough for Putin to swallow. We would probably have to demilitarize the Baltics in response and draw down Ukraine's forces, to have any shot at success in negotiations. Putin would probably end up paying at least in part in oil/gas, rather than currency.
- Putin probably has to cough up or relocate the fleet in Kaliningrad. The Baltic would probably have to be demilitarized. This will cause the Germans and Danes problems.
- We would probably have to recognize Russian sovereignty in Crimea, unless Putin finds himself in some dire straits indeed. Not sure how we swing that one in a palatable way. The Black Sea also probably has to be demilitarized.

Honestly, the single biggest stumbling block to a peaceful resolution is actually the way the Western media portrays this stuff. They're effectively advocating for status quo ante plus Putin punished, because their experts are all former government diplomats and security officials that toe the party line. That's not how peaceful settlements work. If we're going to stop the war through diplomacy, which is more or less a necessary condition for containing further escalation, the West is going to have to give some stuff up in order to get some stuff it wants. If the media is going to punish Biden, Johnson, Macron, Scholz et al for finding a peaceful out that Putin would actually accept, there's not a lot of hope from here.
