I don't see him backing down. He's already said that he'll only negotiate if Ukraine surrenders... which won't happen yet.

So in the short term it'll likely get worse (over the next day or two).

Then, what happens then? It's like he knows he's finished either way. He either takes Ukraine and raises another iron curtain or he gives up and is tried as a war criminal

And I think he'll be willing to flatten a city or two in the meantime

The issue is Russia isn’t some tinpot country that has its leaders hauled before a war crimes tribunal.

For that to happen Russia would need to be invaded and conquered - maybe it should be but it never will.

You're right, there is a lot of bs being spouted on twitter by 'advisors' and other propagandists. Both sides can't be trusted really as they're both involved parties.

Still, the BBC has been the most consistent and truthful of them all in my opinion.

We (the West) need to urgently (at least as urgently as helping Ukraine and organizing sanctions) find some way for him to get out of this mess he has created, not "peace with honor" but something that can take into account what Russia feels about NATO encirclement and guide them down a better path.

Cutting off from swift is not sure yet. Von Der Leyen still has to get the ok from european leaders.

Not sure it's a big deal as it's made out to be, China and/or India are readying another international payment system from all accounts.

Devil is in the details of course, “certain number of banks” could be a loophole big enough to drive a tank through, but from my limited understanding that central bank one could really hurt.

Surely to be folks here with more of a banking background than I have but if a bank cannot participate in SWIFT does it call into question the solvency of that institution? Makes me wonder if word get out there may be a run on banks in Russia starting Monday.
