If Trump ends up being elected then he's very much on the record as saying that Europe has to up their defence spending and not rely on the US. Can they take that financial strain is the question as they all appear to be in one way or another indebted to each other. Hard to understand how the UK can commit to long term multiple billions of aid to Ukraine while people die on NHS waiting lists.
I think that thought process is probably more mainstream in the US than just Trump. They need to pivot to Asia and I would suggest the post WW2 settlement is over. Heading for different times; the priority has to be getting the economy moving for sure and sorting out health care etc but there will clearly be a need to maintain security.

30billion of test and trace app money to recover - bosh! 10 years of support for Ukraine straight off the bat!
Makes you wonder where it's coming from,it's scary when you start to look at the national debt of EU countries never mind the UK.

Give this guy a call, and he works through boris' rolodex. The culprit(s) are in there for sure. Televise it, so we can all have a good chuckle.
Letting them off only enables the next set of thieves. Time's up!

Biden appears to be committed to Ukraine. He question is can the US keep up the level of funding for as long as Ukraine need it. The BRICS plan might be to outlast the US/NATO alliance.

I just don’t see any way out for Ukraine beyond a negotiated settlement. NATO isn’t going to get directly involved and I don’t think they can win on their own even with support.

The easy answer to this is "yes".

An awful lot of government spending in the West, and especially here in the UK, is wasted on maintaining things like outsourcing, faux-privatization and artificially propping up markets (such as the housing market). Forcing rational thinking onto government spending will reduce a lot of that waste, and increasing genuine investment into defence industries will produce returns (jobs etc) there and in the wider economy - this is something that ironically has already been demonstrated in Russia itself.

The same goes for wider society. Does anyone here think we'd be worse off if we as a society imported / consumed less tat?

It's easy though. Cheap tat that's costing the earth? poisoning the rivers and the air? I don't care, to depressing, let someone else worry about it... "I'm alright Jack!"

Consumerism has led to the inevitable failure, feck the cost, stick it on credit. Well the credit's run dry. It's time to pay the piper and suddenly it's all 'not very fair'. Society can get bent! Tiktok and x and amazon is god now, worship at that alter.

If push comes to shove in Ukraine, I hope they blast all the power plants and make the land toxic (radioactive) for the next 50 years. Let russia own fields it can't use. Good luck clearing the mines out of that.

This has been obvious for a very long time. However, the key will be to get them to the table at a time where they have some cards to play. Right now, they'd have no business at a table as they have no leverage at all - and Putin wouldn't entertain them as long as he thinks he can get more. Which he does.

Keep your fingers crossed that the wind isn't coming from the East or you won't need a light in your fridge. Your milk carton will do that job.

Interetsting discussion below with Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Russian Anti-War Committee founder and a former player within Putins circle. Western politicians need to understand that they are not dealing with a politician in Putin, they are dealing with a gangster.

I'd say the propaganda on our side in recent months, especially around conscription, indicates otherwise. They just need people to believe its a last resort
