It is certainly Russian backed. If Russia is bringing Transnistra into play then they must think that it will be to their benefit. It separates off that little bit of Ukraine to the South East and potentially offers 2 fronts onto Odessa. Conversely if Ukraine gets back up to speed in weeks rather than months it's easily isolated and they could give it a good kicking.
Trouble ahead whatever happens.
I am not sure - this crisis does seem to stem from Moldova’s actions, not Russias. I am also not sure how they’d ever put it into a position of being able to open a second front either - how would stuff get there?
