It is certainly Russian backed. If Russia is bringing Transnistra into play then they must think that it will be to their benefit. It separates off that little bit of Ukraine to the South East and potentially offers 2 fronts onto Odessa. Conversely if Ukraine gets back up to speed in weeks rather than months it's easily isolated and they could give it a good kicking.

Trouble ahead whatever happens.

I am not sure - this crisis does seem to stem from Moldova’s actions, not Russias. I am also not sure how they’d ever put it into a position of being able to open a second front either - how would stuff get there?

Think it’s got more to do with the shooting down of the two RuAF A-50’s.

Their job was to coordinate and control air assets near the front lines - the loss of two of these most valuable aircraft along with their entire crews is causing confusion with Russian air missions.

Having read the transcript it’s evident that (if it is genuine) that it was merely a discussion based around the possibility of giving Taurus to Ukraine between some high ranking German military types.

At no point was any senior German politician involved, in fact they were talking / strategising about coming up with a list of options regarding Taurus and potential targets in order to present to Pistorius.

So the concern should be not what they were talking about (seems fairly reasoned and straight forward) but rather, if it is a genuine recording then how the hell was it allowed to be intercepted and made public?

Doesn’t Germany understand the term COMSEC?

Germany has declined in supporting Ukraine with the Taurus long range missile equipment as it could be used for far longer strikes into Russian territory. I suppose that it has been discussed a lot and the option of hitting the Kerch bridge under direct German 'supervision' also been in that discussion.

The Germans have also openly said that UK and US military have been involved in Ukraine when using our supplied tech.

All in all, the Germans have been complete gobshites in the last week and made it easy for Moscow to propaganda-ise stuff that should be expected to be happening in a situation that we're in but normally kept under wraps.

It works both ways, though. It's like the British and the French want the Germans to put themselves in the direct firing line by supplying Taurus but run for the hills and cry foul at any suggestion that they themselves should be exposed to any risk at all - even though everybody knows that they do indeed have people on the ground.

What we are seeing here is the limits of risk appetite. It was Scholz who made the comments about the British and French - and it is he who will not risk sending Taurus to Ukraine unless the Americans put themselves directly in line first. There is method in his madness.

I stand to be corrected, but I'm sure that I read somewhere that in the late 90's, that someone in Zelenskyy's improv comedy group made a crack on a Russian comedy contest TV show comparing Putin to Beavis and Butthead when he first started bombing Chechnya?
Apparently it was Putin's favourite show at the time, and he was there in the crowd, and if looks could kill...
