The way to harm the Russian economy was always (and is still now) to harm what it is dependent on; energy supplies. If we decarbonise and help the rest of the world to do so (in an open and honest way), the current Russian economy would collapse.

We saw with COVID what a small reduction in demand did to the oil price. We’ve seen what the small efforts towards renewables has done since Feb 2022 to contain the rise in gas and oil prices. We should do much more in that regard.

And if we did this, we might go some way to fighting the existential threat from climate change and global warming.

The French do seem to have presidents who do that a lot.

Then again it's easy to make statements like this when you know that it will be highly unlikely that its ever followed through with.

Offer Macron a state visit to Moscow when this is all over and you'll see one of the biggest volte-face in 21st century politics.

I wouldn't take much notice of Macron. Any French president who has sent only 5% of what Germany has sent to Ukraine is not going to risk French boots on the ground. When it comes to Ukraine, Macron doesn't even talk a good game.
