Just reality. The U.K. is far better protected than you can imagine…no one is invading us……
Any invasion would have to be preceded by air supremacy on the part of Russia. Definitely a lot more complicated than people think for them to invade the U.K. any attack, I think would be cyber, and the next stage would be strategic which is basically Armageddon.

Further sanctions they say. Do me a favour, make money money and more money.

This is precisely why sanctions are such an indiscriminate "solution". Unless you are truly prepared to close all loopholes - which costs political capital, time and money - then all you are doing is reducing your own wealth by transferring it to those places that act as middle-men for the Russians: Georgia, Turkey, India, etc.

What's more corrosive, then, is that the general public begins to realise that the sacrificies they have been forced to make have been largely pointless - and this then corrodes support for the Ukrainian cause.

If we want to sanction the Russians - and morally, we should - we have to penalise the likes of India and Turkey - because they are profiting from our moral superiority. Without the political will to do this, we are simply virtue signaling while making ourselves poorer - and I don't need my economics degree to know that.

Or we could just admit that sanctions as a system do not work, based on the past thirty years evidence from repeated instances of them not working.

The way to harm the Russian economy was always (and is still now) to harm what it is dependent on; energy supplies. If we decarbonise and help the rest of the world to do so (in an open and honest way), the current Russian economy would collapse.

We saw with COVID what a small reduction in demand did to the oil price. We’ve seen what the small efforts towards renewables has done since Feb 2022 to contain the rise in gas and oil prices. We should do much more in that regard.

That's far too long-term for short-term politicians who are more interested in being seen to do something rather than actually doing something effective.

Russia to the east, the south and now the west. Was Kev right give or take a few years?

I always thought Transnistria would have played a bigger part in this, especially when Russia grabbed Kherson and next up was Odessa. If Ukraine hadn't reclaimed the city we could be looking at a land locked country now with Russia acting with impunity. Kherson's recapture will he seen as key in this many years from now.
