Czechs too

A lot of the Eastern European states that were under the USSR sphere of influence despise Russia for a multitude of reasons - some the same, some different.

I have a fair few Polish relatives who fled post WWII. These people have lived in the UK for decades as did their descendants, but they still fluffin' hate them.

Czech-Russian hate is quite modern thing, it only started after ww2 and Soviet doing nasty things there. Of all the Slavic nations in Central and South-Eastern Europe, Czechs were the one that most bought into Russian "Pan-Slavism" project.

Understandably, they were under Austrian boot for centuries and then 1939-1945 under Nazis and they kinda seen Russians as their saviors at first

My grandpa was among them.

The President is truly inspirational.

And as for Klitschko, the Mayor.. could you imagine that Khan fella, the London Mayor standing and fighting for his City ?
He’d be like -“Sorry Mr Putin sir, but you can’t bring that tank in here mate, doesn’t meet our emissions standards! Oh ok you really really want to - well in that case I’m going to have to charge you £50 for the day and if you don’t pay within 24 hours I’ll report you to Ms Richard (I did put D***, but got it removed - inappropriate language!) Pleasure doing business with you, thank you, enjoy your stay in London Town”!

Anyone else have the feeling that now defeat does not look inevitable the Western powers feel more emboldened or, worse, required to ask?

At first, they may have thought sending weapons would incite Russia and probably be wasted, whereas now Ukraine appears to be doing better than expected.

Additionally, Russia may not be appearing as strong as first thought.
This depends on what we define as defeat.

I don't think it's likely at all that the Ukrainians can keep Kyiv. I equally don't think that the Russians can both conquer and hold all of Ukraine at this point. What we're seeing suggests that Putin's troops would be hopelessly outmatched against an insurgency. They have shown neither the training nor the discipline to avoid repeatedly getting snookered.

Is it a win for Putin if he puts an illegitimate government in place over all of Ukraine, replacing this arguably equally illegitimate regime resulting from the overthrow of the democratically elected Yanukovych, or (more likely) installs a puppet government which holds sway on the east bank of the Dnieper and claims sovereignty over all of Ukraine facing a rival claimant in Lviv? Either alleviates at least some of his purported security concerns, but it's hard to see him forging a state ruling over Greater Russia and the Baltics from this mess.

Putin stated at the outset (in different words) that this was intended to be a limited war with limited objectives that did not involve holding territory. If he achieves limited objectives at substantive cost, including unmasking a lack of readiness among his forces, did he win?

These are not questions with easy answers.

Czechs too

I never knew until I worked with a lovely Polish girl for the last few years, who I'm still friends with now. She's as peaceful and kind as they come but she explained how the Polish just have the deep, embedded hatred of Russians due to the events of WWII.

I guess it's a similar feeling for the Czechs, albeit for differing reasons.
