So what are the timescales ? If you say years then to my mind it’s indefinite.

What exactly would you like to see happen?
If Ukraine stop fighting and sue for peace and give Russia the 18% of lands they currently hold, Do you really think Russia won't be back for more be it 5 or 10 years time.
If Ukraine keep fighting and win that's the end of Russian aggression and other firmer Soviet states need no longer worry about aggression.
If Ukraine keep fighting and loose then Ukraine becomes Russian and Russia builds up military strength and we'll see the same situation in Moldova, Goerga and pretty much any former Soviet state not under NATO protection.
No matter what happens in this war bar the unconditional surrender of Russia will lead to future bloodshed.
So I ask again what exactly would you like to see happen here? And how would you see that work going forward with regard to future conflicts?

The only realistic option to end this is the total seizure/capitulation of the land called Ukraine to Russia.

The west have too much strategically to let this go but aren’t capable of driving out an army the size of Russias from next door. It’s not realistic.

At present we have a restricted war where there is attrition and casualties but no game altering strategic actions.

That may yet come into play. That is what will end it.

Otherwise we’ve got another Syria on our hands - and who wants that ?

Not going to lie, that's completely mental... this is a land grab, if what you are saying happens then Russia will attempt similar land grabs in other states.. Appeasement has never worked it has only ever led to further bloodshed. Putin wants his name in Russian history books along side other Russian hero's who expanded Russian lands.. he is nothing more than an egotistical monster using BS excuses to justify genocide in Ukraine.
Security the country with the most Nukes in the world isn't worried about security.
Nazis yes there was an element of Nazis in Ukraine but Russia has a far bigger nazi element than Ukraine ever had.
Demilitarise Ukraine wasn't overly powerful and posed zero threat to Russia.
The people in Dombas wanting to be Russian this was a staged event everyone knows this.

There's 2 reasons for this war
1. Land grab.
2. A fear of democracy.
