@edge sorry, you're correct - Poland is now over the 2% mark.

It's not symbolic. We've doubled our troops in the last week albeit it's still not huge. The crux of it however is they're NATO troops and from UK/US.

Any attack on those states and our troops is casus belli - e.g. war. @BlueToff he doesn't want a nuclear conflict.
I don't think he wants war or nuclear conflict with any of the NATO lot but I think he would probably unleash both at this stage if he was pushed.

That's not to say he shouldn't be pushed as much as possible, mind.

If there was (and there indeed was) a choice between having Biden or Trump you're actually saying with hindsight you would vote Biden?

I mean the whole world isnt afraid of facing up to the US with Biden in charge.

Surely that tells you something?!

I find it mind blowing that after all Trumps faults people would choose a coward who is now 0/2 in Afganistan and now the current mess.

He didnt say that...at least not the way it was in black/white.

He's stated that Putin's tactics were spot on...and its hard to disagree with that from where Russias troops are standing.

????

No one has suggested a "military act" as far as I can see.

The sanctions are incredibly week.

Trump and Johnson were funded by Russian Dark money, as was Brexit. Aaron Banks, Steve Bannon, Cambridge Analytica and Vote leave campaign. Both Banks and Bannon have strong links to Russia. Both campaigns aimed to get Trump/Johnson in and get us out of the EU. You have to ask why would Russia want those? Because it benefits them and weakens us/America/Nato and the EU, as well as democracy.

Banks is suing Guardian journalist Carole Cadwalladr for exposing the Russian dark money links.

I think whoever voted for Biden needs to take a long hard look at themselves. If China attacks Taiwan...what does Biden do?

Heck if nukes are on the way over into the US from somewhere...the idiot would probably not even know where he was.

I also think that the Italy, Germany and Hungary rejection of Johnsons request to remove Russia from SWIFT is a total disgrace.

For all the big talk about sanctions...no one has lifted a finger.

Those 'sanctions' are a joke.

I dont think he's a lunatic.

Hes an evil, cold, calculating monster who has robbed the Russian people to line his pockets with money and power.

Now he wants to go down in history.

Only an absolute fool would vote for Biden with the benefit of hindsight after Afganistan and now Ukraine.

If I was American, Hungarian, Italian or German id be absolutely ashamed and disgusted at the politicians.

Apparently Johnson put forward more sanctions but none of those 4 leaders approved them.

He also talked big and has not followed through.

Im absolutely angry and disgusted.
He took his chance. Biden cocked up the withdrawal from Afghanistan so much, it showed weakness. The EU and much of the world is so reliant on Russia's natural resources. Nobody wants a global conflict and to take on Russia means all of NATO's forces would have to be united in it.

Russian 'dark' money will have funded a lot of things.

It's currently funding our football club.

Putin now asking for talks.

I'm no expert in this... But given the poor start to the campaign etc is he going to look for a way out that saves face here?

Do Ukraine accept an offer on the promise of neutrality? Or go for the jugular here?

Thats not dark money. May come from shady dealings but its not the same

dark money

: money contributed to nonprofit organizations (especially those classified as social welfare organizations and business leagues) that is used to fund political campaigns without disclosure of the donors' identities

Caspian Report is very good on explaining the complexity of geopolitics (lots of good stuff on China as well)
I've tried posting the youtube link but won't let me so if your interested in understanding the current situation without the western bias search [capsian report ukraine russia] on youtube

Source of all this?
Al lot of nonsense is being posted on social media. About that Holomostel airfield being recaptured for example, turned out to be wrong or at least contradicted by Russian sources. Same about destroyed tanks and other social media visuals.

Strange how you seem to know they wanted to take a city within 24 hours when high sources confirm they never expected this kind of assault. What is your source?
Do you know what the concept of OSNIT is? Mainly that, alongside snippets from ex-colleagues and what you can find elsewhere.

In terms of taking Kyiv, it's the most plausible scenario based on everything out there and common military practice when you consider the circumstances.

Recent reports suggested Holomostel isn't yet operation for Russians as it'll be a staging post for reinforcements. The important part is they used VDV for this.

We call it JFT (Joint Theatre Entry) where the entry units seizes and establish a lodgement to build up forces independent of land manoeuvres.

The key issue here is speed as paratroops are vulnerable to counter-attack (a small force defending new territory), have limited equipment and limited supplies.

So time is of the essence. Such a sudden assault to take the airport alone would likely link to an assault on Kyiv itself, with links to the land forces moving in.

Take Hostomel, deny the Ukranian's access to the air, bring in troops and push for the city within 24-48 hours. Otherwise, the VDV would be at huge risk.

In essence, there's no reason for the assault unless their plan was to take Kyiv quickly. It appears as if their first assault worked and look at the (supposed) outcome.

It's basically military doctrine, which pretty much most squaddies would recognise. If the Ukrainians stop the Russians at the airport and/or the quick movement...

... it all becomes more difficult. The issue is what was expected comes that they felt it would be a push into the Donbas first and Ukraine later, not in unison.

Have the Russians yet to take a city or key locations? It appears not. Again, this would be a major element of any plan.

If Russia wanted to crush Ukraine they could do. Nothing about saving face, it's only been a day!

There's a much bigger political game being played by Putin here. What he wants he was hoping to get with the threat of invasion, didn't happen so he invaded.

In a way, the rest of the world's inaction is probably much more of a surprise to Russia.
