There was resistance a long time before the winter of 42/43. It was only come 1944 that a full military offensive could be mounted on the western front, but that doesn't mean nothing happenned.

There was a stat posted previously, maybe @PhilM can help, showing defence spending across the EU compared to Russia. It was considerably more even without America.

Russia is around the fifth highest spenders world wide, with a high percentage versus GDP (4.5%) compared to many other nations.

The UK actually don't spend much less in fiscal terms, but it's a lower % of GDP although still above NATO 2% desire/requirement at close to 3%.

Collectively, we far outspend Russia on defence, still there's a lot more to it than that. Lots of NATO countries do not spend 2% with only US, UK and France.

There's also the issue of Russian conscription, how much they spend per solider and the general cost of equipment compared to costs her.

Their standards are increasing although the mantra has often been quantity. It costs us a lot more to train and maintain each solider compared to Russia.

Same with equipment. Still, you're right: we spend far more collectively but the issue is with efficiency and it's spread across maintaining lots of separate forces.

It seems pretty mental to me that we spend ungodly amounts of money on a military and aren’t ready to use it in any meaningful capacity. If the intelligence services are to be believed they knew this invasion was likely for months.

It would be my hope that we spend "ungodly amounts" of money on the military so we don't have to use it. Just a shame in this instance that it's not been manoeuvred into a place where it's proved enough of a deterrent. Plenty of things to be learnt as we move forward from this.

Without going all histrionic it looks like humanity is taking a turn in the wrong direction currently.

I wonder if the German attempt at world domination didnt collapse could it have grown to be more progressive in this day and age. Take Americas continued domination and spread.
