Opposition pro European and civil rights supporters are fuming at the law that they see as a crackdown on their European aspirations and the attempt of the Georgian dream bloc to bring them closer to Russia.

It should be pointed out here that Georgian Dream also want to join the EU, and did ask to do so this time last year.

It should also be pointed out that, on geographical reasons alone, a bit of pragmatism with regards to Russia is eminently sensible for any Georgian government.

Over recent years the bias from the Georgian dream towards the EU has dropped off somewhat. There could be many reasons for this but one idea in play is that certain folks within the GD party now see closer ties to Moscow as a more realistic goal.

A lot of people in Georgia see this law as a restriction on their freedoms and civil liberties and ultimately another step closer to Russia.
