Also, as long as the fanaticism American soldiers encountered in the civilian populations as they made their way up through the South Pacific (particularly at Okinawa) had continued, even the “non-combatant” deaths in a mainland invasion would likely have far surpassed the deaths from the two bombs. As horrific as the bombings were, it’s very difficult to argue that they weren’t a net positive to the final death toll.
