But there is a fundamental difference between their negative net spend and ours.

Spurs have spent SHEDLOADS of cash in the last few years. However Levy has recouped massive amounts in the player sales too.

We have spent feck all, and most of our player sales have netted buttons.

In other words, buying £200m's worth of players and selling £200m's worth of players may get the same net result as buying £30m and selling £30m, but they aren't the same thing.

Which is why net spend is useless by itself.

Spurs net spend over that 3 year period must be viewed in context of their high wage bills and previous high spending.

So in essence we are right on the cusp of the real money but paying the premium in wages and the like for being competitive? Oh excellent.

I guess half of the clubs in the Prem, including us, are aiming to spend just enough to keep ourselves in what people call mid-table. That is just enough to guarantee league survival (bar a very bad season), but have practically zero ambitions for European Competition. Of course every team need different players, so you got bigger spenders like Sunderland this season, or teams which keep their shoestrings very tight and only look for bargains (Swansea, and in some sense Norwich). But their main and perhaps only purpose is still league survival.

We need at least spurs level of spending to cross into CL land, which sadly we will never be able to afford.

That's aligned with my thought tho. they're now six teams that DWARF Everton in spending, even getting to the champions league really wouldn't help this club that hugely.

( lol where did those quotes come from)

Unless I am mistaken, just being in the PL is the real money now. Meaning the money on offer from CL is not, relatively, what it was.

Yes. It's true.

Two ways to prove it can be done though are to buy a team full of unknown gems for little money as seen on the continent like at Port, who buy gold for cheap, sell high.

Or you get lucky and introduce a youth team full of some of the best talent of their generation - see United mid 90s.

Other than that. Spending is a must.

I'd regard us as a little unfortunate to have not made the Europa the last couple of years. That would be worth extra money now, although what effect that would have on our league position and income from the league would be, I don't know. We have ambition for European competition, its just we cant realistically expect to finish in position for THE European competition.

the TV revenue from Europa, afaik, is just peanuts. Something like ~5m compared to ~30m.

I hate to be negative but in reality there are now 2 leagues in one the haves and the have nots. Gone are the days where teams mainly played British players and the playing field was fairly level. Very much dependent on a managers ability and scouting networks. In todays environment it is all down to money, even with FFP ( which I believe is a farce as it will only maintain the status quo ). It is difficult to compete with teams that have money these days to sign top players, and even if tou developed a strong youth academy the chances are those players would be cherry picked by the top 4-5 teams, even if a young players head wasn't turned by the thought of a bumper pay day.
Sadly the days of not knowing who would win the league at the start of a season are long gone, now its the usual 3-4 suspects bandied around in the media and by fans. Many will not agree with me but the worst thing that happened to football was the premier league.

I think the champions league takes more blame than the premier league.

You should jump ship to watch the MLS. Every team save the scrap heap got a good chance of winning it eventually.

Agreed the amount of money on offer for that gives the top 4 teams an automatic advantage. However I do think the current league has had a major impact not only on the financial side, but also in the way fans are now treated. It is all about tv now.

Great response, so rather than have a bunch of teams in with a shout of winning the league you are happier basically in august of being able to predict the final standings in may.

Everton winning the league under current circumstances is just ridiculous.

We had a very good manager (someone who I rate higher than Martinez, you're welcome to disagree) and we didn't get anywhere near. Even if by some miracle we reached the champions league it'd be a flash in the pan. We'd never have the resources to maintain it. Depressing but realistic.
