Player Valuation: £60m
We are told that without hundreds of millions it is impossible to compete at the top table today .
Is that really true ?

A young Mourinho conquered Europe with a team that cost buttons(relatively) from one of the lesser European leagues.

Would a young Howard Kendall or a young Brian Clough or a young Alex Ferguson prove that it is the managers ability that hits the ceiling rather than it genuinely being impossible for a club without great riches to compete.

Unfortunately these talented young managers are spotted early and move very quickly to the wealthier clubs.

Remember in the 1980s the team that Kendall built was from a ragbag of sources , a collection of players that would be mocked mercilessly by certain posters on GOT if it had existed then.
Sheedy,a Liverppol reserve,Reid, a crock,Southall,a binman, Gray,another crock,Sharp, a young Scottish striker..the new McFaddenor the new Naismith.
We had to change banks to borrow 60k to allow HK buy Reid. Yet from this hotchpotch he assembled probably the best team in Europe or a team that was right up there amongst the best.

I think a young Kendall or a young Clough or a young Ferguson could do that again.

I am hoping that it can be done by a young Martinez.

You realise you've just compared our second highest goalscorer of all time to Steven Naismith, don't you mate?

Great post(y)

Only thing look at some of the players in that Porto side compared to our current side

Also, back in the 80's, our rivals didn't have billions to spunk left right and centre to maintain the status quo.

It's nice to imagine but football has changed so dramatically now that trophies can't be won through determination alone.

That's where it comes down to it for me.

I honestly believe that a truly world class manager could win the league with everton despite being outspent 6 times over.

But truly world class managers don't come to clubs like everton because they want to see how far they can take the best teams in the world instead. Which is natural.

But that's the glass ceiling in a nut shell. The way the best talent in all aspects of game are stolen by the big clubs.

Would Chelsea or Citeh have won the League in the last 10 years without the backing of their owners?

No, I dont think so either. .

I think it ultimately comes down to money and players wanting instant success. If a Keeper like Nev was around now say.... would he stay here for a few years and build something good from the bottom up or would he go to a madrid or Barca type team and get the instant success and huge payday he wouldn't get here..... that is why I believe that an occasional top 4 finish is about as realistic as we can hope for until we get some investment or a board willing to back us. Doesn't have to be ultra millions either.

They can. The league, maybe not, but Wigan and Swansea have proven trophies are still attainable for those outside the financial elite.

Wigan ere strong favourites in all but two of those games. Our worst performance of the season and an off colour City. They needed a replay to beat Bournemouth. It wasn't exactly the plucky tale of the gallant underdog.

Swansea's only real challenge was Chelsea, who at the time were a car crash of a side under Benitez.

Watch and see this season, all 3 major trophies will be won by Chelsea, United, City or perhaps Arsenal or Spurs.
