The glass ceiling....truth or fiction.

I think Wenger, after they moved to the Emirates, has been, relatively, limited in funds until their debt stabilised. Now it has, and they have real cash available, its like he is almost scared to spend it!

Who was that nutter Gooner on here a while back? Angelwitch? He would explain it better!

It used to be building a successful team brought enough money, kudos etc to attract better players and grow accordingly, not so now.

A team without a benefactor breaking through developing 5 or 6 players from nowhere gets pillaged before the next season; the coach usually goes, the better players get sold and it's back to square one.

That's the real glass ceiling.

Why would a team still having a ownership problem want to throw every single penny to try winning the league, if they can get on and earn more by being constantly #4?

A bottom-line savvy backroom would aim for either #4 or #17. Anywhere else means you wasted money this year.

So true that mate. Well put.

Except that if we broke through in the way you describe, then we would be a much more attractive proposition for such a benefactor.

*dreams*

it makes me wonder reading this If champions league would would "really" even help the club progress forward. so many teams have spending power right now that dwarfs Everton, it makes me wonder if getting champions league even once would allow the club to progress. or would it merely allow them to spend in that one window play catch up? Spurs, a team that isn't even in the CL had spent more than £50mil in this one window alone..

I think Arsenals aim is to be #4 TBH over the last few years. They have done that, so fair play. But I reckon you are right really. Why bother spending nothing more than enough to maintain 3rd/4th place? Makes perfect sense on reflection.

Sad really.

Up until this window Spurs also had a negative net spend over the last three to four season I believe.

We will play some lovely stuff this season, but without any investment we won't make the top 4.
That doesn't bother Bill though.

Basically its another Sky pot in there, plus more international exposure. CL is basically what keeps Arsenal afloat.

Football is more than just a business though. If everton started to aim for 17th then we wouldn't be able to attract/keep hold of decent players, attendances would plummet and we'd soon end up in the championship. Not that savvy really.

But he's right in his general point.

Which is that it costs more money to move up a place in the league then you get in rewards for doing it.

17th or 4th are risky things to aim at, because the drop off in rewards at 18th and 5th is so stark but the money needed to be spent to improve on 17th and 4th vastly outweighs the money you gain from doing so. (In attendence and tv deals and reward money.)

So in essence we are right on the cusp of the real money but paying the premium in wages and the like for being competitive? Oh excellent.

But there is a fundamental difference between their negative net spend and ours.

Spurs have spent SHEDLOADS of cash in the last few years. However Levy has recouped massive amounts in the player sales too.

We have spent feck all, and most of our player sales have netted buttons.

In other words, buying £200m's worth of players and selling £200m's worth of players may get the same net result as buying £30m and selling £30m, but they aren't the same thing.

They've spent big previously though and acquired players that they've sold for big profits. Which is why their net spend is low. Speculate to accumilate n'all that. That £10m they spent on Bale isn't looking too bad now either.
