Succession Planning - Managerial Wishlist

Some talk about Andoni Iraola possibly ending up at Everton, and while you can see why the idea gets some people interested, it doesn’t really look like a clean fit on paper.

The main issue is the squad. Iraola’s style is all about really high intensity pressing, constant running, quick transitions, and players who can keep that up for 90 minutes. Everton’s current squad has been built more for compact defending, physical battles, and grinding out games rather than playing that kind of relentless pressing football. That’s a pretty big gap to bridge without a proper rebuild and we hardly have budget for the complete overhaul of the squad.

The other thing is expectations. Everton fans obviously want progress fast after a few tough seasons, but Iraola’s way of working usually needs time to really settle in. His system relies on fitness, repetition, and the right recruitment, it’s not an instant fix style of football. And at Everton, patience hasn’t exactly been in huge supply lately.

It’s not about questioning his quality at all, he’s done a really impressive job especially at Bournemouth. It’s more that the timing and setup at Everton just don’t look like the easiest match right now.

Iraola is an upgrade on Moyes in terms of footballing style, however Moyes has a trophy under his belt, so in that regard Iraola cant touch him. That is why I would prefer Glasner, has won more than the two of them, plays attractive attacking football when it is on, defends and hits on the break when it is not. Seems to get the best out of (and be every popular with) his team. If we aren’t keeping Moyes and this feller was an option for us, we would be insane not to get him.

You are aware he and the recruitment team may be aligned to buy the players to fit in with his philosophy? Can't be any worse than Moyes not playing the players bought for him after all

moyes won the intertoto cup, not the champions league.

I thnk this is the very point people are making in regard to managing a club with expectation - right now people say they will be paitent while Iriola develops his style, but if we are 2 points above the relegation zone while his style is being implemented then people will loose their minds.

Its like last summer back then everyone was all for "buy young and develop for the future and have them in a year or two and lets be paitent" we do that - while now its "Moyes wont play the players bought for him".

The expectation level at this club is different and while you admire things from Bournemouth, Palace and Brighton - in truth this is a different job with different expectations i think what Silva has done at Fulham is a case in point - thriving at a smaller club, with smaller set up and expectation - while he was eaten alive here. Maybe Lampard as well

Moyes himself is a case in point of the contrarian jumping of expectations here - this time last year he was lauded, if he was right then, then why not now or do people just chop and change depending on wins and losses at any one time - you build nothing that way.

Iraola didn't win any of his first eleven games or something like that at Bournemouth. Can you really imagine us giving him the time and benefit of the doubt like that here?
They sold his goalkeeper and 3 of his back 4 from the previous good season they had if I remember correctly. I reckon even evertonians would have some sympathy for him if that happened here.

No, that was this season. In Iraola's first season he was backed pretty heavily - they spent £120m and sold practically nobody.

Fair point, but that is more than Iraola is it not?
I'd already put Iraolas achievements in the game up there with or even ahead of Moyes.
He has Bournemouth in a possible CL spot after having their best players sold. Thats kinda nuts!
If they were both unemployed in the morning, which would get the more prestigious job?
Moyes needs to get on with being Celtic boss.
I will say that if it was a straight up choice, I'd prob go for Glasner over Iraola due to the kind of players we already have.

Really? Can I ask which players you have in mind here?

Glasner plays with wing backs, we probably have the least well-suited players in the league for that system to my eyes.

Whilst that is true, whats the alternative? Stick with Moyes and let him bring in more "experienced" players who tire out after 60minutes? So we keep with the same type of manager because our squad isn't really suited for anything else? We have these players because, for the last half decade, we hve been in a relegation fight because of limited players and managers. Sticking with that model isn't a recipe for anything other than stagnation, at best.

Every season is different of course, but there still needs to be some continuity in the squad. No club signs 15 new players overnight. Like I said earlier, a big part of this squad would need replacing to properly suit that style of football, and I’m not convinced we’re in a position to do that right now.
