Which managers have progressed us?

Since Howard Kendall’s 2nd spell in charge, which managers or manager do you think have actually improved us from what they took over?

When I say improved I mean by the end of their spell comps to when they joined us.

I’d say there are 6 managers in the past 33ish years, so 6 of 15 permanent managers although Moyes and Kendall did double stints in that period.

Joe Royle
Walter Smith
David Moyes
Sam Allardyce
Carlo Ancelotti
Sean Dyche
And again David Moyes

Some of them are weird shouts, but you have to remember what came before. Even Ancelotti is borderline as he joined after Silva but left us in 11th with a ridiculous wage bill. Some may query Sean Dyche, but only if they forget how bad Lampard was.

 🤪

Now I know you are trolling us. Goodness me.

Bobby brown shoes was immense in his first season. I sometimes wonder if he had a bigger transfer budget to sign proper defenders whether we'd have kicked on. Even in his further seasons we were doing well in the cups and playing good football albeit sporadically.

….for a period not so long ago, standing still was an achievement in itself especially with absent owners and points deductions to deal with.

Somebody posted how improved so many of the current squad is since Moyes came in so that’s a good litmus test.

Moyes in his first spell for a period, it was obvious it wasnt sustainable or they could push on further for champions league or dare I say league titles because of the set up of the club itself. He himself calls his first time in charge , successful.

The “best of the rest” “punching above our weight” “be careful what you for” etc.

As much as he did alright I found his first time a bit demeaning to the club itself, how it was portrayed as some underdog and they were all happy to go along with it.

He did a Slot

Stuck with the Moyes defence but added a little bit of quality up front (Lukaku and Del) but in the 2nd season he implemented his philosophy and it went sideways.

Couldn’t adapt or unwilling too but after the first season it was bad

I get and agree with that, but also if our budget only allowed an Alcaraz can we really be too mad that our defence went to crap?

Look at his Belgium squad..

I know it's 2 totally different fields of management, but he had everything he needed.

As much as I respect everyone's opinions on it, the fact is he operated with roughly the 12th biggest budget in the league (on average) during his first stint (that accounts for transfer fees and wages), and he averaged roughly a 7th place finish - he considerably outperformed his budget.

Historically, of course we are a bigger club than that but nobody has ever been able to articulate to me why he should have been winning trophies or finishing higher than he did in the context of his budge being the 12th biggest other than "because he just should have" or "because we are Everton"

Fact is - we WERE an underdog and that wasn't of Moyes's doing, it was Kenwright's and Moyes effectively was making the best of what he had at his disposal.

I'd like to think that things have changed, but even now in the window that's just passed, Everton might have spent £100m or more but 12 other teams spent more money than we did.

Back firmly on topic - Only Royle and Moyes can legitimately claim to have left the club in a much better state than when they took over

Wigan were the same, just before they got relegated under Bobby.

The only managers that left us better off when they left were Moyes, because he took over when we were at a very low level, and Ancelloti, but I always thought he saw the car crash that was about to happen and was only too glad to jump ship.

I have just said we were unable to push on because of the club set up and custodians and the underdog thing became more and more apparent which I found demeaning to the club itself.

The culture from that time put the club back years.

Moyes said that “knife to a gun fight” rubbish which was demeaning as well. He wasn’t innocent in all of this mate.
