Sell to buy

A tad surprised Brands has been so vocal about sell to buy - the desperation to offload players is only going to strengthen the position of any buyer.

Selling players is also inevitable, think it'll be a mistake to delay bringing players in until after we've offloaded some.

Please include the entire squad list in your working out, with the OUTs in bold

I expect up to 15 players to leave from those listed above be it sold or on loan if Brands can find deals for them (he rightly points out that PL wages are a barrier). Brands is impressing me so far but he'll have to be a magician to get decent value from some of the dross he needs to shift. Good luck to him.

Factor in 4-5 coming in for a net 8-10 squad reduction. I think when the dust has settled we will see a modest net spend of £20-30m to add to Moshiri's £150m invested so far but a 25% reduction in wage bill. The latter is the primary need driving the cull as it is not sustainably affordable under PL rules for us.

I know sell to buy sends shudders down Evertonian spines but Moshiri has to hit the reset button to try to get us to where we should have got to last off-season. Everything about Brands suggests we are returning to something closer to the Moyes philosophy of careful scouting, tight knit squad plus the Martinez virtue of young players actively encouraged and developed.

Brands will be working with more resources than Moyes ever had. He just has to convert some under-performing players into cash to get things moving. It is painful but exactly what we need IMO. An absolutely necessary rethink and reset that may see us struggle a bit in transition next season but should put us back on a better path for the future.

Stekelenburg Free
Cuco Free
Williams 2mil
Browning 1mil
Galloway 1mil
Mori 12mil
Pennington 1mil
Connolly 5mil
Feeney (probably loan)

McCarthy 5mil
Williams (joe) 3-5mil
Grant 500k
Klaassen 12mil
Schneiderlin 18mil
Mirallas Free
Bolasie 10mil
Rooney Free
Sandro 6mil
Niasse 15mil

I could see those players in bold perhaps staying. 14 players out minimum no problem.

Issues

Stek - if a new keeper happy to play backup is found, again.. probably fits the M.O to keep

Williams - maybe but we'll be subsidising wages

Mori - fans dont like him, but one of two who fit in a high press. better chance him staying especially only for 10m

Pennington- new contract just agreed

Macca - fitness

Klaassen - wages, already indicated he wants to stay

Mirallas - wages

Bolasie - wages / may want to stay / may be deemed as required. see: Mori

Sandro - will probably be subsidising wages

Niasse - can see this being as likely as any to leave as he actually has value.

Taking in major losses on players has consequences. 5-6 big earners to leave max. Id be willing to bet they will start with those who dont give a damn. Schneiderlin, Mirallas, Sandro and Williams.

Then you start talking about Brownings and Williams' etc.

10 out absolute tops.

I don't think its quite all the players on this list, because 38 players were mentioned and I think that's 43 in the list below, I think some are in the youth team and would stay there but for me I would sell the following

Let's all repost the squad list lads, only been done five times so far

Phil Jagielka
Leighton Baines
Seamus Coleman
Kevin Mirallas Sell
Luke Garbutt Sell
James McCarthy Sell
Joel Robles Sell
Muhamed Besic Sell
Tyias Browning Sell
Kieran Dowell
Gethin Jones
Brendan Galloway Sell
Matthew Pennington
Ramiro Funes Mori Sell
Oumar Niasse
Tom Davies
Callum Connolly
Jonjoe Kenny
Idrissa Gana Gueye
Maarten Stekelenburg
Mason Holgate
Yannick Bolasie
Ashley Williams
Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Morgan Schneiderlin
Ademola Lookman
Wayne Rooney Sell
Davy Klaassen
Jordan Pickford
Sandro Ramirez
Michael Keane
Cuco Martina Sell
Gylfi Sigurdsson
Nikola Vlasic
Beni Beningame
Morgan Feeney
Nathan Broadhead
Harry Charsley
Alex Denny
Anthony Gordon
Fraser Hornby
Cenk Tosun
Theo Walcott

That would be 10 players out and other than Rooney and Martina, I don't think we would miss the others. I also don't think we will get good money for these players, but getting them off the wage bill would be a good start.

Others (Like Bolasie, Schneiderlin, Williams, Klassen, Sandro, etc) can go if we get replacements for them. We also would need a LB and CF, to replace Martina and Rooney

the sum total from that long list that is quoted here isnt far off 50m per season in wages

think it'll be a mistake to delay bringing players in until after we've offloaded some.

Given the length of the transfer window this year I must confess to being nervous about this. Can we really afford to wait 4-6 weeks before starting to bring players in? Not really.

As you say, he's also knackered our negotiating position by making this clear.

I'll never understand why the club feel the need to give a running public commentary on such matters.

We won't be clearing all those wages though. No doubt if we ask people to leave, will be subsidising. Mirallas, Bolasie, Klaassen etc in particular

Blame Koeman and Walsh.

15 i think minimum...

Mangala / Robles / Henen gone already

Rooney (on the way)
Garbutt (pointless)
Browning
Galloway
Jones
Grant
Mirallas
Pennington

Thats 11 players already gone.

Its madness how many there are...

When we add in the possibles of Williams/McCarthy (if someone takes them) and Klaassen, Mori,Schneiderlin thats 16.

Its like an enless list of rubbish players...and then we have the 'Grime rapper' Bolasie...

To the lot of yous that are fuming about this "sell to buy" nonsense, would you rather we keep all of the rubbish players on massive wages and then add more players to increase our squad size even more? Hes not saying we don't have the funds to buy more players, hes saying we can't buy more until we get rid of the dead weight. Our squad is already massive and filled with horrendous players.

The ones you are listing are the easy rids though champ. Robles was gone when we signed Pickford, Rooney was doomed from day dot, Mangala was a loan and didn't Henens contract expire?

The rest are on fat contracts. Mirallas, Macca, Klaassen, TubbyW Bolasie etc.

And Moris currency in Europe doesn't match his capability. More financial sense keeping him.

Sandro and Schneiderlin probably a bit easier to get rid of, because like Rooney they want to leave.

17 players there though...and you said 10.

Merely highlighting that theres 14 more to bin just oj that quick list and i didnt even include cuco or besic or etc etc
