Sell to buy

Not being rude, but I’m not really sure of your point. Are you suggesting that if we sell Klaasen and use that money to buy another player of higher quality, we are not financially better off therefore there is no gain in doing it? I’m sure we would both agree that we want higher quality players, but I think it makes perfect sense to offload players to make room in our transfer and wage budgets to facilitate this rather than hold onto them because we may get less than we paid.

I'm not that cob, but to answer your question: yes.

From a purchase point of view - losses we make on players hinders our ability to purchase new players. Happens, if our amortisation doesn't keep up with transfer pricing sales.

From a wages point of view - yes, because we still have to pay enormous wages for players who aren't playing for us. from an accounting perspective, it isnt sustainable.

There's at least 20 players I rather see leave before Jags or Baines.

Schneids
Williams
Bolasie
Sandro
Rooney
Mirallas
Martina
McCarthy
Niasse
Klassen
Besic
Funes Mori
Vlasic
Galloway
Robles
Garbutt
Pennington
Grant
Tarashaj
Browning

Once we've cleared this lot out then we can think of changing our best centre back and left back.

My point is selling the majority of our players in the market is likely to be done at an overall loss, that eats away at cash flow and disempowers our ability to make other signings. Therefore its not a simple equation of selling players, clearing the wage bill and getting fees in and everything will be fine its likely to have an impact on budgets etc.

No i think its essential, its just not as simplistic of just getting rid, that inevitabily has an impact which will mean i suggest we will be working in tight budgets, its also not ideal strategy wise as its very much dependent on the wishes of the selling club and the timing of want they want to make a signing. we are trying to move a significant amount of players as well, not just one for a big fee.

But we have already paid 24m for Klassen, and are paying him however many thousands per week. If we sell him for even 12m, that is 12m more in the bank than if we don’t sell him, and also saving however many thousands a week in wages.

I understand buying for 24m and selling for 12m isn’t a sustainable model, but if the 24m is already gone, then surely it is better financially to get at least something something back than continue to pay his wages for 4 years then have him leave for free?

These would be my players to sell:
  • Williams - for anything. I reckon a promoted team or a Brighton/Villa/Stoke might take a punt at £1m. Villa could replace a slow, finished John Terry with an even-slower and even-more finished Williams. £1m.
  • Mirallas - think his value has plummeted to around £5m. Such a shame, but he has to go I think.
  • Bolasie - Surely someone like Palace would take him for £15m.
  • Schneiderlin - considering we turned down £22m from West ham in Jan, we should be looking at £25m for him.
  • Rooney - not sure about this reported £12m fee (amazing if true) but getting him off the wage bill is worth giving him away.
  • Martina - League 2 player on £35k a week. I think we are stuck with him for another 2 years. Absolute dog of a player, anyone that would take him to get him off wage bill would be marvellous.
  • Besic - stock is higher after impressive loan spell. Could easily get £10m for him
  • Klassan - If we could get £15m for him we would be doing well. More likely to go out on loan. Will not fit into a Silva system. It is unfortunate that Napoli have changed manager as they wanted him in January.
  • Niasse. If we were to get the likes of Bas Dost, we could sell Niasse for £15m. I like him, he just isnt a good footballer who's stock is high after some impressive goal poaching last season.
That's almost £100m and barely weakens our squad at all. I would keep Mori (but buy a new starting centre-half), Sandro (worth another shot under Silva), McCarthy, Vlasic and Lookman (who both should thrive under Silva).

My punts on new players
  • Ricardo Rodriquez. Apparently available for £15m from Inter. Would solve the LB issue.
  • Hirving Lozano. Has stated he would be willing to speak with Brands if asked. Clear signal he would come. Would love this one confirmed before the WC incase he has a stormer. £22m was mentioned, will probably be more.
  • Johnny Evans. Reported £3m release clause. We should be all over that.
  • Bas Dost. Available for a knock-down fee from Sporting.
  • Star centre-midfielder. This could be the real statement of intent. Not sure of who, but maybe someone like that Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio for about £50m.
Pure football manager/FIFA stuff here, but 9 outs and 5 ins with minimal net-spend if any, and a reduced wage bill!!!

I’m not concerned in the slightest.

Will we end the window with a smaller squad? = yes.

Will we end end up with a reduced wage bill? = yes.

Will we lose a number of players who contribute little? = yes.

Will we be selling our best players in order to buy? = no.

Will we reduce the age of the squad? = very likely.

Will we get 3-5 players in who will improve our team? = very likely.

Will we see better football played next season? = most definitely.

Things will be better and for once I actually trust in the management team that’s in place.

Happy days

I bought a car for 10k. I now want to buy a better car for 20k. Someone offers me 5k for my car. No one offers me any higher. Do I - A. sell it and have 5k to put towards my new car meaning I only fork out 15k or B. keep my old car and let it rust in the garage and fork out 20k for the new car?

If you have three years of repayments on the 10k car. Youve lost 15k overall. Youve spent 30k to inevitably end up with a car worth 20k.

Everton may need to that with the majority of their players out (old car) in (New car). We may need to do that that 10 times so the overall loss to buisness and impact on cashflow could impact on what type of car we could buy.

Players on high wages, with long contracts will want to 'stay and fight for their place' while taking those higher wages. We will try to sell them but in the end they will go on loan and we will have to fund a good proportion of that wage. Not exactly saving much and generating no money to purchase replacements. This is the real world.

Once we manage to shove some of them on loan we are left with very little time to get replacements in, at least quality ones. Obviously we need a smaller squad and hopefully a decent wedge of the deadwood are not on long contracts or that high a wage. But come on, if they're considered our deadwood then who in their right minds is going to buy them for decent money anyway, it's not as if we are Utd and can offload our junk for inflated prices.

I know it's only an example mate, but Lazio want £90m and if he goes, it'll be to a CL club.

For the record, I do want Klaassen to stay as I believe as a player who wants to stay and fight for his place he should be given opportunity.

Anyways,

The way you need to look at Klaassen is 24/5 = 4.8m a year in amortisation. This does not include things such as agents fees. So his current accounting value is around 19m. If we sell him for 12m, we make a 7m loss and this hinders us buying other players due to FFP.

The wages model is the sustainability issue. We are paying him a far greater wage, than anybody else would. Hence we would be potentially paying 50-60k a week to a player who isn't even ours.

I believe I read somewhere that Lazio are notoriously hard to negotiate with. Seems mad when Fabinho and Fred are going for £50m. It's such an important position, imagine Reid and Bracewell playing in behind Sigurdsson. How much would they cost today fs!

Savic is, in all fairness, really only best suited to one system - and that's a 4-3-3/the 3-5-1-1 that Lazio play. A bit like how Pogba is at his best in a 4-3-3 as well. Basically he needs to be in a three-man midfield.

He's a great talent, but you have to build the team around him.
