If she’s gone into icy water, she may have suffered respiratory failure - cold water shock. This can eventually lead to cardiac arrest due to the shock.

Even the most competent swimmer can suffer in extreme cold.

Exactly. The most logical hypothesis based on the evidence appears to be correct.
I was rafting in New Zealand in glacier fed rivers and went in and shock is the right word for it, I'm an experienced surfer and was wearing an life vest and fully expected to go in the drink and it still just instantly stole all the air out of my lungs. I can't imagine what it would be like if it came as a complete surprise and you were not dressed for it

So multiple ways to stay in the water.
I used to dive a lot, mainly in reservoirs, and lakes, but also rivers on occasion. I have dive in water which was 2°C in fully dry suit with top of the range thermal undersuit, winter gloves and hood etc. The absolute most I could manage in those temps was 20 minutes. I dare say professionals could do a bit longer but it wouldn't be magnitudes of difference. even if double it would only be 40 mins.

Has anyone seen the underwater forensic expert guy doing the rounds on the news? He's saying it's very unlikely she is in the river, otherwise she would have been found by now. He's says in rivers like this, usually a body doesn't travel far. The current's just aren't that strong unless it floods.

Disclaimer: Not a GB News viewer.

The guy just stated his professional opinion, he does this work all the time for the Police, why is he nasty ?…….

The man has done this many times before. He’s not a TV presenter, he’s a professional at what he does which is why the police employ him and his team. He may not display empathy, but he knows his job and that’s what the family needs…..

What on earth are you talking about, he's making use of media outlets to specifically reach out to the family so he can help. The very opposite of "ignoring idea its someone's wife and mum". And they gladly accepted, he's there now.

I believe his outfit are the only ones in the country with the sonar based scanner. It's more accurate and quicker than just divers alone which is what they were already working with. If they can rule out the river then the police can focus the efforts of the investigation elsewhere, and perhaps start treating this as something more malign.

It's nowhere near as helpful as armchair character assessments of rescue volunteers on an internet forum of course, but it's something at least.

The guy is a specialist and knows what he’s doing. If he says she didn’t go in the water then the Police should listen. He’s been dragged into the media limelight because the Police keep insisting she’s in the water. Police are exceptionally good at a great many things, forensics etc, but let’s be honest they don’t trawl waters for bodies every day of the week, while this guy and his experienced team do on behalf of Police forces all around the country. His team have state of the art equipment and have done this often enough to be listened to……

Lesson from this is anyone that reaches for.speed dial on GB News at the first sign of a tragedy is probably a wrong un

You may recall the story of the four children in the lake in the Midlands: they died from cold water shock that led to circulatory and respiratory failure.

The subsequent result is that they drowned, but in reality they tragically died within thirty seconds due to lack of oxygen and the heart stopping.

If she went in, intentionally or unintentionally, this could easily cause her system to shut down, which meant a competent swimmer is disabled.

It seems the most likely, I know people get a bit fevered by the headlines but in all likelihood there is no villain or mystery, just a very very sad accident and some grubby opportunists in the aftermath.

GB news is not a news channel

The lesson from this is that the Police also searched the same area of river and found nothing and nor did the specialist. It’s going to be harrowing for the family if it turns out to be the woman in question, and even more so if it’s found that she died in the water. So please take your smug little dig comments elsewhere…..

The only thing that seems peculiar to me is that she couldn't get out of 2-4 feet of water after falling in, unless she hit her head on rocks or something that rendered her unconscious? Don't want to add to the crassness of the amateur detectives out there or anything just find it odd. Tragic for her poor family.

it isn't that odd - people drown in baths

"Exhibit A", as the prosecution might say

What is odd is that a specialist team with the latest sonar equipment and police divers can search what is a small and shallow river and the body turns up three weeks later just a mile away from where she went missing…
