if you put people outside society , underclass, poor education, high unemployment , poor parental role models, this is what you get, be it in London or anywhere else.
Not an easy one to solve, if indeed it ever can be.
Spot on, you make people feel inclusive in society, you go a long way to solving the ills, it's like the Tories have never watched the wire

And? With an estimated population of eight million, that's one police officer for every 258 people if you use the actual figure of 31,075.

Then take into consideration officers being on specific duties such as traffic, CID, robbery, firearms, restricted to desk work or simply off sick.

How many would that leave for day-to-day territorial policing? Then you must consider shift patterns (five shifts groups for the Met) and times.

Let's just say, you're not going to be looking at more than a few thousand on duty at any one time and at night might be less than a thousand.

A growing population with less officers and more restricted to specialist duties means that ultimately you will be waiting longer these days.

Expect a response for shop lifting under £200? Nope. Drive off from a petrol forecourt? That's civil. Burglary? Not aggravated, then maybe not.

I`ve also heard, that The Met also have to " borrow " from the British Transport Police quite heavily too, due to being over stretched in certain areas .

My understanding is that the BTP only have powers within a certain area outside of a train station / train tracks.

Yet it would appear that this is being ignored due to sheer necessity ?.

A BTP Constable has the same powers as any other territorial force, however their area of jurisdiction is primarily the track, rail network et al.

If they're to act outside of this natural jurisdiction then usually it needs to meet be at the behest of the home force or when it ultimatly requires it.

For example, if they witness an incident that instantly needs a response, and it wouldn't be realistic to wait for a local cop, then they should act.

To their credit, they actually do a really, really good job as they're proactive and don't have a lot of the bureaucracy that most other forces deal with.

There's long term societal issues which are the root cause of violence and the surrounding issues. Better education, better employment opportunities, stability in the home are the long term answers.

But it's absolutely obscene that 50 people in London have been murdered this year and we aren't even a third through. We need a very strong response in the short term to stop this cycle and a zero tolerance to knife culture in the next while cause we can't carry on having kids murdered on a daily basis.

That only works to a point though and the underlying issues remain. Some are government related, some are parental, sone are on an individual level. Not a quick or easy problem to solve.

I’m sure they can police an area up to a mile from any train station. That probably covers the majority of London due to the amount of stations.

So 2 more this afternoon.

Bloke on 5 Live this morning, ex black gang member, now a social worker, nailed it. Even though it was an uncomfortable listen.

He explained there is currently a "war" (his words) between black East London and black North London gangs. Mainly drug related, but also fed by social media spats. (Dont disrespect me sort of stuff).

He said that every time there is a stabbing/killing in one part of the city, there will be one in the other part. Asked if the Met knew, he said, to paraphrase, "If not, then why not, cos everyone else remotely connected knows".

Like I said, uncomfortable.

We are talking about Diane Abbott, she couldn’t tell you the day of the week with any certainty.......

On this subject she has rather more experience than you or I. Ramping up stop and search, unless it is done with a lot of care and intelligence, is a recipe for disaster.
