In our city, Liverpool, it appears to be on the rise. There have a been a number of knife related murders in the city centre during nights out.

However in London it looks like it’s got completely out of hand. There have been 15 murders in the last two months alone.

London now has a worse crime rate than New York. This is the first time in 200 years.

It was never this bad. So what has gone wrong and what’s the solution?

Stop and search not happening, you reap what you sow unfortunately. It doesn’t look like we can charm or convince the little scrotes to stop knifing people, perhaps we can at least target them and lock them up for a lengthy sentence for carrying........

How would you choose who the police are to stop and search?

Since 2010 the Met has lost 3000 police officers, and is due to lose another 3000 by 2020. That is on top of around 7000 members of police staff who have also gone, many of whose roles still need doing. Dozens of Police stations, the Yard and even Hendon itself have closed, been sold off or reduced in size.

When you add that to the cuts to youth services, mental health services and the rest, and then throw in the general attitude that you are no one unless you have money, it should surprise no one that mayhem ensues.

It's about finding a sensible balance: effective stop and searches arguably have a strong impact on catching criminals and reducing crime.

While obviously we'll never go back to a situation of the SUS laws, which were a great tool, that were ultimately misused alongside racial profiling.

Therefore, it all boils down to what is correctly perceived as 'reasonable grounds' and ensuring transparency in communicating these grounds.

If an area has a problem with knife crime you stop and search whoever is in that area. These crimes are typically done by people under 30 and tend to be male, so there is your target group. Everything should be caught on camera.....

What do you mean by area? Street? Town? Postcode? 10 mile radius?

Crime can only be stopped on an on going basis by going to the source of reasons - poverty, lack of engagement in community, better social services.

Let's also be aware that knife crime had been dropping, a two year rise is obviously startling but it doesn't actually prove anything. A decline in stop and search actually matched a decline in knife crimes for the years prior to these two.

Now before you start generating faux anger and froth. By area, I mean an area where knife crime has already taken place on more than one occasion. I would bet good money that none of those killed recently in London was down to poverty, lack of engagement in community or requiring better social services. Removing knives and removing the people who carry knives reduces murder by knives.....

The police don’t stop and search near as much as they used to. At one point stop and search fell as much as by 80%.

This was down to May who was then Home Sec telling the police to stop or the power would be removed. I think the police are also reluctant to stop and search for fear of being branded racist and then having an official complaint hanging over them. Seems to be a thankless job. And of course as some has mentioned the large reduction in funding/numbers.

Maybe we need more interaction in schools to stop these blockheads carrying knives but I imagine most of these idiots probably don’t attend school.

I think that would generate problems of its own, Pete. There is no faster way to breed resentment and anger towards police than profile orientated stop and frisks. It flies in the face of presumption of innocence, and can make already isolated communities even more disdainful of the law
