I’m sure they can police an area up to a mile from any train station. That probably covers the majority of London due to the amount of stations.
Their powers are all based on their agreed service agreement they agree with each provider and is based on a set criteria of land which is primarily owned/used by railways. However, as I mentioned earlier, their powers held as a constable are actually inline with any other home office force - basically anywhere if meeting certain criteria.

On this subject she has rather more experience than you or I. Ramping up stop and search, unless it is done with a lot of care and intelligence, is a recipe for disaster.

Why does she have more experience. She lives a gilded life away from anything unpleasant. The head of the Met has said that she is in favour of setting up a dedicated team to target the bad guys and basically get them for whatever they can and get them off the streets. This at least sounds positive. Abbott only ever tells us not to do whatever seems sensible......

So 2 more this afternoon.

Bloke on 5 Live this morning, ex black gang member, now a social worker, nailed it. Even though it was an uncomfortable listen.

He explained there is currently a "war" (his words) between black East London and black North London gangs. Mainly drug related, but also fed by social media spats. (Dont disrespect me sort of stuff).

He said that every time there is a stabbing/killing in one part of the city, there will be one in the other part. Asked if the Met knew, he said, to paraphrase, "If not, then why not, cos everyone else remotely connected knows".

Like I said, uncomfortable.

Which is what we expected really. Now perhaps we might deal with it. Now if only the London Mayor could pop his head out of under whatever stone he is hiding and give some leadership something might happen.......

Burgess Park near Elephant and Castle. The park has the odd incident unfortunately with daft kids doing stuff to one another. Suspect this is one of those times.

This is it you see Bruce. The way it’s described ‘the park has the odd incident unfortunately with daft kids doing stuff to one another‘, is becoming the accepted norm rather than being viewed as completely unacceptable. This is the slippery slope, acceptance of bad things is what destroys society........

*shrug* I dunno Pete. I suspect the majority appreciate that it's a) very rare, and b) a gang thing. That means it's pretty unlikely to affect regular folk at all. Even with the police there today, there were still lots of kids riding their bikes or playing football. Just a normal day really.

It's a bit like the terrorist incident at London Bridge. I was in Borough Market the following day and people were going about their business as usual. Keep calm and carry on or something.

She is the MP for one of the boroughs where these problems have occured on and off for years pete, its safe to say she knows a lot more about what is going on in her constituency than you do.

Also whilst the "dedicated team to target the bad guys" is welcome, I'd point out to you that this isn't 120 extra cops - its 120 cops taken from doing something else.

The Mayor has already increased the funding he gives the Met and spoke out about the dangers of the Government continuing its cuts months ago (and don't forget its responsible for 70% of the Met budget, compared to the 30% he is responsible for). The Commissioner has been making the same warnings as well, almost since her first day in the role. The people to blame for this are the people who occupy the Government.

This isn’t an issue of police numbers, and 120 police is a drop in the ocean. This is about addressing the real issue that is happening on the streets and not trying to make political points about funding or Tory government. If she represents an area that’s had these problems for years then what has she done, what did she do when Labour were in government for 13 years. The Mayor controls the Police in London so I’m told, so what is he doing. We have two political pygmies doing absolutely sod all here yet trying to blame everyone else. It’s now being reported that this is really a fight between two black gangs of cretins, who the police no doubt know, so let’s see if they can move as quickly on these gang members as they did in arresting a 78 year old burglary victim.......

Again though Bruce ‘it’s pretty unlikely to affect regular folk’. I’m more than happy for these people to kill each other and rid us of their ilk, but every now and again an innocent will get hit and we should move heaven and earth to get this scum off the street. We have the power and the wherewithal, we just need some leadership......

Between 2010-2014 (available and accurate home office figures I could find online ) police numbers were cut by 11.6% the Met by just under 6%. In roughly the same period front line officer nationally cut by over 20,000 . The number of PSCO’s cut by just under 40,000.

The met’s budget has this year been cut by £325m on top of previous cuts of about £600m.

There are around 700 less firearms officers than there were in 2010. From home office figures It dropped 1300 between 2010-2016 but a recruitment drive has since that increase a bit .

I can’t believe anybody can think that the above won’t have any impact on crime figures or can completely dismiss any potential relationship to the recent spikes in murder rates . I’m not saying there aren’t other influences , of course socioeconomic factors impact along with a host of other facts. I also take it as a given that a 78 year old man was arrested in his home for murder before that’s put into the debate .

Dont the above figures have to count for something ? Surely from a purely scientific point of view if you cut something out or reduce it and it leads to a reaction you have to consider the possibility that the two were related ?

Of course its an issue of police numbers Pete. Do you even know about the changes that were taking place in London because of the cuts?

Of course the numbers count for something, but there are still over 30,000 police in London. The 120 to be used for this special op is insignificant. Perhaps they could spare just a few more to sort these murders and stabbing out wouldn’t you think......

Ok, let me try something else. If you had 30,000 officers at your disposal and a spate of stabbing sand murder were causing mayhem and ruining the reputation of your City, would you a) do something or b) moan about previous cuts......
