Which evidence is that?
I should have been clearer.

What is the main impact right now on keeping hopsitalisations/deaths low? It's the vaccines.

The evidence that masks aren't really that important is surely that right now, in this 'third wave' of cases, we're hitting similar case numbers as we were last autumn - back when masks were compulsory too. Had they had so much impact, we would surely have seen a bit more of a dent in the numbers.

Now, obviously, on a crowded train or public place or shop, I wear a mask and I'm happy to do it and honestly, like I've said, I'm surprised that they're not keeping them as mandatory.

But if the data really, really did suggest that they were so vital, I don't think they'd be dropping them...

They're an extra safety precaution, but social distancing (as in the most literal sense when we had to do that) was much more effective than masks, and the vaccination is much more effective than that because it allows stuff to open again.

I can't wait to go to a gig, hopefully the one I've got booked in August goes ahead. I'm sure everyone can't wait to be back in Goodison in a month too.

Obviously if you run a search there'll be plenty of articles either way on the subject. But just going off the actual numbers, I really can't see masks have been as effective in saving lives as the poster seemed to suggest.

The common cold, Influenza and Covid are all spread on droplets breathed out by an infected person.
Surely then, anybody with a sniffle or a cough should wear a mask to minimise the possibility that they will pass on their infection to a third party.
Wearing a mask if you have a sniffle is standard practice in many countries in the far east.

I'm not arguing against that.

I'd even be happy enough to see them remain mandatory for the time being.

I just don't think they're the second-best thing we have to fight this virus is all.

Hospital figures - 3 deaths were announced today, down 3 on yesterday’s late revealed total of 6 and the exact same total as last Monday. 1 death was in an English hospital, down 5 on yesterday and down 1 on last week. The 7 day rolling average remains the same at 15.43

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 9 deaths were announced today, down 6 on yesterday and up 6 on last Monday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 18.29

For the 60 day cut off, 9 deaths were announced today, down 8 on yesterday and up 6 on last Monday. The 7 day rolling average rises to an even 23

A lot of the Tories are 'libertarians' to a certain (and an arguable) extent so probably don't want the act to be in law. Particularly the rebels.

I get your confusion, when Johnson explained it I was a bit perplexed as well.

Dont get it either, but Whitty does, so will go with that. All about the NHS at the end of the day I guess.

My pal reckons school holidays will act as a circuit breaker and reduce the amount of virus circulating going into October...
Who knows.

Still a great follow. Did he ever come back on here?

He was hassling the Everton account for a 'presser' hourly the other day.

He only tweets the same fan-abusing thing three times just to fish. He's the original virtue signaller.

If he's on here it's a newer account. His other one hasn't been used since 2018

Yeah I am surprised - or as surprised as it's possible to be with this government - that they're not making them mandatory on transport, in shops etc.

I guess on the flipside though, you'd then get people moaning about having to wear a mask on a train, but then people not having to wear one at a gig or whatever.

It's a very minor thing being made out to be a big deal by both sides of the argument I think. I just can't see masks, at this stage in the pandemic/vaccine roll out, being that decisive.

Further info for anyone interested.

PCR confirms I have it. Been pretty unwell the last 24 hours, similar to having the flu. Luckily it's stayed off my chest so far.

Although deaths might be dramatically reduced, there's going to be a lot of ill people this summer

All the best to you mate, hope you feel better soon.

Same here. I said a while back, I reckon SD and masks in shops will/have become the norm, and neither are that big a deal. Prefer SD if I am honest.

Indoor gigs and nightclubs seem to be the potential curve ball though.
I think it's a bit of horses for courses sitation.

I won't be wearing a mask in the pub because, for purely social/interaction and practicality reasons, it'd not work. In a supermarket however, I will wear one.

Some may say that the higher risk would be in the pub especially with ale and they'd be right, yet compared to nothing at all it's still increased protection.

I honestly have no idea what other choice we have?

As above, we have all done our bit for the last 15months, most people have been jabbed, lockdown really cant last forever.

Full vaccination is available to everyone over 18 so it's time to fully open up. The schools all finish around 19 July, or earlier in other parts of the UK. I don't see there ever being a better time, and personal responsibility was always where we were heading to.
