What they've (rightly) done is try to put the fear into the younger in society so they stop acting like bells and going about their usual business.
Yes, younger people will get sick, some seriously, but in reality they won't be dying from this. That's the truth of it; all they're doing is... not "lying" as such but playing up the negative of the disease and downplaying the positive so as to get people to take it seriously.
I don't know what it's like in the bigger cities but around me, every night this week the pubs have been empty. Open, but empty.
Me and my mates were going to go on Wednesday but decided against it. Most people are listening to the advice. Most of the people who are still going about their business as normal are the elderly. Me and my mum have just had to convince my grandma (who lives alone and is in the early stages of dementia) she really doesn't have to go for a pub lunch today. My mum has been seeing her every day because my aunt is currently in isolation because of my cousin (who had a flu jab on Monday) having a cough and fever (which has now gone and he's totally better, but they're having to follow the advice).
But it all boils down to the west been totally inept in preparing for this imo - Europe and us as a whole. We had weeks or warning to get ourselves ready. Increase the number of available beds etc, requisite private hospitals etc, increase the production of ventilators. Basically, do all we can to protect the vulnerable groups in advance, without crashing the economy.
We acted too late and now are paying the price in lives that are going to be absolutely ruined by this (and I'm not even talking about me here, as
@Nymzee has rightly pointed out the other day, I'm still young so at the end of the day I hope there'll be opportunities which come up again). But entire businesses and families are going to be devastated and for the government to support all of them is going to ultimately just lead to another 10 years of cuts and cuts.
We're going to be three times - at least - worse off after this in terms of debt-to-GDP ratio than we were in 2010, according to predictions. European countries are going to be even worse. It's really scary.
