Not under Goat's thing it didn't. I know he was half-joking.

The experts have stressed how important everyone being as healthy as possible is in this as well. Part of being healthy is not being cooped up indoors.

I have been paying attention to the news.

There has to be a balance. If you're in a rural area and can avoid close contact with people anyway what's the harm in being able to go for a walk or a run?

A lot of people are going to get this and the ones who will get it badly will, 9/10 or whatever, be people who aren't healthy for one reason or another. So the healthier you can be while still being wary of others, the better, surely?

To be honest, the term lockdown to me is a little misleading. As far as I'm aware a lockdown doesn't confine everyone to their homes it just stops people from going to pubs/clubs/museums/restaurants etc. I believe it won't be an offence to leave the house but possibly is an offence to try enter certain premises. I'd imagine it's just a blank promotion on social distancing but you can't keep people in their homes without great military assistance which we wouldn't do.

All speculative of course, I can see pubs/restaurants being banned shortly but not so much of a house arrest that people are scared of.

That's absolutely fine and as I can only speak from experience of where I am, it's nearly happening anyway. A local cafe is shutting today, following suit from another two which went earlier this week. I just hope they can come back after all of this.

The pubs are mainly empty, bar the old boy regulars it seems.

And yes, on that second point about keeping people inside, it just won't happen in this country. So people having a go at others (I'm mainly talking about social media here) for doing things like turn up for work in a pub which hasn't shut, or simply going outside for fresh air or even going to the gym (many of which, if they are still open, are taking measures like shutting steams/saunas down and turning certain machinery off to increase space between members) is a bit out of order at this stage.

It is basically house arrest when there's nothing to do. As I've said my main issue with all of this is how - maybe it wasn't avoidable altogether - but it seemed we could have taken measures which were more geared to protecting the vulnerable rather than crash the economy and lock people away.

Cheers Lid.

If I am to be permitted to do the bare minimum whilst at home, it still doesnt change my feelings about them shafting everybody else. On a selfish note, however, at least I can pay the bills.

So I too am laid off until at least April 20th. The situation is that the March payments have already been authorised so we get full pay for this month but the company will seek to claw back the last week from everybody from the next time we get paid (because we're not even that valuable). We can take leave, or go onto emergency dole for 65% of our income.

I am officially sick until monday with stress and depression, and I have an appointment with my doctor to OK my return at 1400. I'll be taking that opportunity to extend my sick leave and still get paid. If that doesn't work, I'll have to take my holiday.

Be under no illusion, people, your employer cares not one jot for you and yours. You are just a fixed cost.

This article will show how varied the term lockdown is: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/18/what-a-coronavirus-lockdown-might-mean-for-london

I believe the point in bold isn't out of order whatsoever. People shouldn't be going to gyms, pubs or restaurants just because they aren't shut yet and that's just being ignorant to common sense. No one is having a go at people going outside for fresh air unless they're showing symptoms/tested positive as far as I'm aware but I avoid social media because there are enough morons on here to need to add to it.

It really isn't house arrest as there are plenty of things to do outside that can be achieved with social distancing. Plenty.

All we could have done is what we are doing only sooner. This isn't avoidable.

I believe if the UK government follow through with their plans to help fund businesses having to send staff off then they'll be nicer about things like this.

Currently they're trying to protect the status of the company it seems which is understandable.

This is part of my anger at short termism in the sector I work in. All anybody wants to do is cut cost. The customers are evil and simply reduce what they pay by a % every year and we have to follow suit.

If anybody thought even a little bit further ahead, we could probably mitigate these outcomes a little.

This company is worth billions, incidentally... the idea that they squeeze us as hard as possible for the rest of the year but the gesture of even a weeks grace period for full time staff before saying "now just sit there until we need you" is too much is a little galling.

Not sure why I would expect anything different, however.

Sadly you may be right in a lot of cases.
If/when things get back to some sort of normality
I know from experience that some won't get taken back on and it won't be just due to lack of demand - it'll be because your face didn't fit.

If you work in a pub, gym or restaurant and you only get paid if you turn up then you have to go. Not everyone can just afford to say "I'm not working today." Most people can't.

Anyone who can work from home is pretty much doing so now. I'm sorry, nobody should be getting on their high horse about people who can't. Once they are shut it is a different story. You can't have a go at people for working and earning money they need to keep themsleves and their families going.

That point in bold. So you're saying we couldn't have been better prepared i.e. more beds available (take over private hospitals in advance maybe?), step up the production of ventilators etc.

We knew this was coming and did nothing. And now the only measures which can be taken are the lockdown ones and even that won't be enough.

So of course we could have done more.

That sucks man. I'm sorry to hear that.
