Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Totally agree Bruce.

Like i've said I'm not trying to claim this was in anyway preventable en masse. But surely more could have been done?

And yes, all these people saying 'oh let's just lockdown for a few months' - I know they aren't taking it lightly - but that in no way is going to guarantee we stop the problem. And then in three months, when people are going back out and there's gatherings taking place, then it all comes around again.

I keep saying but as far as we know the only way to beat this virus (and appreciate it's no sure-fire thing) is to get it and get some form of immunity.

It's here to stay so I don't get how people hiding away from it like it's lingering outside your windows is going to do any good in the long run.

I'm not thick. I know these measures are to slow the infection rate down and hopefully they work. But in the long run until there's a vaccine, there's only one answer of how to be immune to it.

The only way to beat this virus is to go on full lockdown mode till the vaccine is distributable which is forever away so isn't happening.

The part in bold is basically just saying you're accepting thousands and thousands of people are going to die just for the sake of letting some try build up an immunity.

You're not coming across so bright in this thread I'm afraid.

It is so the NHS isn't overwhelmed, which would see the mortality rate rocket. That is why people are "hiding away from it".

You are coming across as quite thick mate. This isn't difficult stuff to understand.

No I'm not thick. I do understand why the lockdown procedures need to go ahead. Don't patronise me please.

My point was in the weeks building up to it a lot more could have been done (by the governments collectively in Europe, and ours especially in this case) to protect those who are going to be most affected by it.

Nymzee seems to think that the only thing to do weeks ago was a lockdown. That's just not the case. We could have had more beds, more ventilators, more preparation.

Don't have any bread as the supermarkets are empty, so no toast unfortunately, but lemon and ginger tea is in plentiful supply.

Hope you guys have people who can hit the shops for you pal.

My Mrs has taken to baking bread here for the first time, normal sliced pan 1.50, ingredients to bake bread 20 euro. I might have to self isolate for a different reason then the virus.

Erm, where am I having a go at those that work in restaurants/pubs/gyms? I never said such a thing I am having a go at those who don't work but still go to these places such as yourself with the gym so back down ol' lad.

Every massively hit country and even ones less so than us are going into lockdown so maybe the entire world could have done more. Nothing we're doing in the UK is unique to us we're just delayed.
The scenes in Italy late last night were horrific people on here have to realise it's not flu symtoms after the initial onset of sore throats temperature etc it rapidly turns into a form of pneumonia with a 50-50 chance of surviving .......in the Italian units they shown Armageddon one Dr called it in charge ......

I’ll be honest I went the gym first few days this week , I’ve not now but I’m already finding it incredibly frustrating but I suppose I’ve felt it’s the correct move for me now . I’m certainly in no position to criticise anyone and I’m already rattling to go .

No I'm not accepting that. I'm saying the lockdown needs to go ahead and has to be in place. But that isn't going to beat it.

And there's going to come a point (in six weeks or 12 or whenever) when the country has to start returning to 'normal'. But unless you have got the illness and recovered then you're still going to be in danger.

All of that is correct and I don't see how you've taken that I think thousands of deaths are acceptable from that. But whatever.

I can certainly see what you’re trying to say . I’m not advocating thousands of deaths , although from all data I’ve seen that’s what’s going to happen . I can see that all we’re trying to do is create some breathing room for the NHS and also to maybe get more kit like ventilators or PPE. However a large number of people, not necessarily on here , seem to be treating lockdown or ‘social distancing’ as a panacea when in reality it seems to me when not coupled with large scale testing it’s very possibly a time buying exercise at best .

I never said that's all we could have done, I think we're handling it fine over here by all accounts in terms of smoothing the workload of the NHS. It could have been so much worse than it is right now. We have enough beds as it stands, we're cancelling non-important surgeries, more faux hospitals are being organised etc. More ventilators would have been nice and I suspect once this is all done we'll likely stock more of them.

Crossed wires then - my initial point (which you quoted) stated i was talking about people online having a go at those who have had to go to work in these places.

I've been to the gym twice this week. Both times it was empty. It's the only place I've gone other than home or the shop this week. I'm allowed to try and keep myself fit. I'm showing no symptoms but I know that doesn't necessarily mean I haven't got it. But what am I supposed to do? I can't get tested so how do I know unless I show some symptoms.
