Then he is either a liar or stupid. There is no third ground here. We shut down too late - anyone with a modicum of understanding of epidemiologist or basic maths knows this.

He is neither. He is a politician and he is protecting the scientists who had a very difficult job to do in advising the government through this.

It's OK for a scientist to say they got it wrong, but if a politician says it, they run the risk of exposing their advisors.

Edit. I do actually think Hancock is both an idiot and a liar. But in this case he is just doing his job protecting scientists

Bit of both, especially because Edmunds was basically saying, if we knew then, what we know now, that we should have gone into lockdown earlier. There's no reason, apart from an amazing arrogance and/or stupidity, for any minister not to agree with that.

The wrong decision was made, but that was partly due to a lack of understanding from the scientists as to how bad the situation had been quickly becoming. Denying that makes it look like you're trying to cover your arse, which plainly he is.

I disagree mate. I think a minister has to protect his advisors. The scientists got it wrong, only by a week or so but that was vital.

Hancock has repeatedly said they made the right decisions based on the information at the time. To say anything else is throwing the advisers to the wolves

I think most of his previous points about racism have been well made . Most of what I’ve read anyway .

Over the last 2 years he has turned himself from a hate figure into a bastion of the fight against racism in football. A talisman if you like, that people could unite behind.

I actually watched this onTV. One SAGE scientist admitted they got it wrong. It was his opinion but it's difficult not to agree with . But it was not expressed by him as the collective view of the experts as you are suggesting
