While undergoing my eye test today, a group of cyclists came down the road, three on the correct side of the road and one on the wrong side of the road...pillock.....
On a 'normal' Sunday morning, the same lanes would predominantly have club riders on them, and while it's not always true, I think most club run leaders do try and ensure all riders behave themselves, both in terms of the letter of the law but also the unofficial rules of the road. It's purely a heuristic, but from experience, club riders do where club kit an awful lot, even if just out on their own, and I didn't see much club kit on display this morning, so it wouldn't surprise me if there aren't a lot of newer riders out there.
Reminds me a bit of the bloke I know in the Lakes, who rides a fair bit, but was down here for a few months and thought he knew how to stay safe because he'd ridden in the Lakes for a few years. Barely a day went by without him being knocked off. When you're as vulnerable as cyclists are, you learn reasonably quickly that there are various things you can do to keep yourself and those around you safe, because you will come off worst in any prang. That applies to riding in London, but also in the lanes. Hopefully they'll have an experienced hand with them who can tell them the ropes so they don't learn the hard way.
