Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Yes, all that is missing is the staff required to carry it out and a public that understands that the things they've been carrying around all day without the slightest bother for years do not turn into THIS IS AN OUTRAGE WHAT HAPPENED TO BRITISH FREEDOMS THAT MY GRANDAD FOUGHT FOR HOW DARE YOU FIND OUT WHO I AM FROM THE PHONE REGISTERED IN MY NAME just because the man wants to use them to find out whether they are ill.

Surely it can only be done through technology like an App or something though? It's not so much a staffing issue as a technological one?

You need people to knock on doors, talk to people and do the testing; all having an app would do (at least the app that Hancock explained) where everything was anonymised would show the state how many individuals had come into contact with a person (and how many had come into contact with them, and so on), how many of them subsequently reported symptoms etc.

Explaining it all in advance gives a perception that could make people complacent. I can see the risks of it. Its better to manage expectations and be cautious in these circumstances.

The sources stuff is a load of rubbish. I've never understood why journalists give it so much weight.

They don't need to explain it all, just say that whenever we come out of it that its likely be a slow release back to a semblance of normality - that its likely to be workplaces where social distancing is or can be brought in that open first, that people at greatest risk will be locked down the longest, and that the government is going to make sure that we have the means to detect new outbreaks with means other than noticing the local hospitals getting busy again.

Door to door sounds like a huge operation to me. We would need to really reduce the cases through social distancing first so something like that could work.

our house is already sold was meant to complete tomorrow before this happened so I doubt there’ll be any revaluation. There must be many people in our situation who don’t just want to move home, bit absolutely need to. Surely a house move can be facilitated adhering to social distancing? The economy needs the housing market
Best of luck mate, lets hope things get moving sooner rather than later.

Not really - the vast majority of the country has door to door visits every day already from around 90000 people (the postmen and women of the UK).

To do the whole contact tracing business would almost certainly not take that many - you'd need people to get the lists of who needed to be spoken to (from the app and probably from other sources too) and then the people to go around, explain what was occuring and do a test.

What is missing is the government willingness to pay for tens of thousands of people to be dedicated to do this for a year or two.

But hooray for those would be first time buyers struggling at the minute to afford them.

The one we are in now is our first home so spent a good few years renting to save up for it. Nice house but too small for if we have a 2nd child - I expect it to be worth more than what we paid for it originally but in the midst of all this God knows what the markets going to be like in the next few years.

Well I don't know. While I agree with the point about why are they asking where are they going, think about what this virus has turned you into mate if this is now your reaction. That someone's a weirdo asking for directions.

three weeks ago you wouldn't have thought such a thing.

So, let's say when the lockdown measures are lifted, are you going to just go back to normal or are you going to still be wary of people? It'll be the latter, won't it?

Like on Tuesday I was on my bike ride. I had a good idea of where I was going but wasn't 100% sure where this path led out. I had to wait for this couple walking their dog to come through the gate and they were a good 5m away from me, at least. Since they'd just come off the path I asked them if it led out to a certain village (it did in the end, my sense of direction is pretty good) - they looked at me and then just rather rudely turned around.

I hadn't approached them. I hadn't gone up to them and got in their space. Yet they still reacted that way.

Fear, mate. You can't live in fear and let fear control you. You can be wary and cautious and follow the government guidelines etc without letting the panic/instinct part of your brain take over. Not saying you did in this case and I agree it's weird for someone to come right up to you, but really, have they done anything wrong?
I've had the opposite reaction from people mate. I'm walking so not sure whether being on a bike is making a difference. Me and the missus have been taking long walks in the countryside around our village using a combination of public pathways and roads.

One day we were on the return leg of a circular walk that takes in a local beach. We had just left a public footpath and joined a country road. I had a fair idea where we were but thought I'd better just check the map to make sure we don't start walking the wrong way. No sooner had I opened up the map that a lady in a passing car stopped, wound down her window and asked us if we needed help.

A couple of days later, we were doing another circular walk when we were on a country road at a tiny hamlet with 3/4 houses. I was having trouble finding a public footpath that would take us back to our village and had the map out looking. We heard what we thought was a woman's voice calling out. It kept calling and it turned out to be a young lad who couldn't have been more than 10, calling from one of the gardens, and he was asking us if we were lost. Yes my missus answers. No I replied, we're just trying to find the footpath back to the village. You've past it he said, and then proceeded to show us where it was, which was about 30 feet away.

Generally, people we've come across on our walks have been very pleasant, and whilst we haven't exactly stood around chatting everybody has said hello or something similar.

Germany undoubtedly spend a lot more on healthcare than we do, and, without doubt, that means they're generally better for it. But I'm not sure the amount spent on headline care is really a massive difference on COVID-19. I think it's more to do with the fact that the less sexy bits of the system are taken more seriously there, and they've used their resources wisely, while we dithered.
They had a diagnostics industry in play from the off and they locked down before others did.

Unfortunately Germany data isn’t included in this analysis but found this interesting about France’s data
France’s official death toll accelerated rapidly in April, after its central health authority began including people who died in nursing and care homes. By April 15th, nearly 40% of the 17,000 recorded national fatalities came from such institutions. This approach should mean that from now on the country will understate covid-19 deaths less severely than its European peers.

By April 3rd, the latest date for which the national statistical bureau has published data for deaths from all causes, there had been an excess of nearly 8,000 fatalities during the previous four weeks, covering the entire period of the outbreak. The official covid-19 tally from hospitals alone at that point was 5,000. This suggests that the true toll was about 60% higher.
